Unfortunately the whole thing was essentially rigged by Kadokawa who was the main sponsor of the event. You can read about it on 2ch or can just go http://atemonai.blogspot.com/2008/03/2nd-seiyu-awards-results.html
The fact that the results were printed beforehand in Kadokawa's own Voice Newtype essentially confirms the prejudice. I'm assuming they're also going to have huge pictures of Setsuna, Tieria, Konata and other assorted characters that Newtype is used to promoting by now. |

I feel like the results were determined based on the popularity of the series as opposed to the actual voice work
 I mean Hirano Aya is a decent seiyuu and all, but Konata in Lucky Star is definitely not the most impressive role (I didn't like the show very much anyway; I slogged through the first thirteen episodes and was not impressed by the lack of humor in favor of moe). Also I like Miyano Mamoru as a seiyuu, but Setsuna is not his best role considering he only says like three lines (including "Ore wa Gundam") throughout the course of the series

Mamiko Noto> Aya Hirano and has been working a lot harder than her, especially in 2007/2008 already. Just my opinion...based on facts...i wouldnt doubt these were rigged tho

No I'm actually dead serious, it wasn't popularity, but the companies sponsoring the event that got to pick the winners. All fans got to do was vote publicly and then show up at the Akihabara District. According to the link I first posted their was no official list of nominees that was ever released though, just the winners, which were published in Voice Newtype and J1mOne (The blogger I linked) managed to see a copy of. |

Hmm, well I'm glad with the results. I love Lucky Star with all of the humor that it has to present. Not only did Hirano Aya win, but so did Emiri Katou and Motteke! Sailor Fuku. For these results, I find myself satisfied. I don't know much about any of the other results.

Kaioshin_Sama, you're really bent on exposing the Seiyu Awards for the farce it is, aren't you? Needless to say, I wholeheartedly agree
I can see how your casual anime/seiyuu fan would be pleased with the results though, given the popularity of Lucky Star in general. |

I really want people to take note that this is how companies like Kadokawa do business, by disguising advertisements and self-promotions as legitimate events or by plugging themselves in series they licence out at every possible opportunity (I still remember the card in Rental Magica that was supposed to be for the agency the characters ran yet had the Kadokawa logo and homepage listed under the e-mail portion instead). And about happy fans, the thing is I absolutely love Gundam 00 and still feel that Kadokawa shoed Miyano and Kamiya in. I mean think about it, what's on the front cover of Newtype constantly and who owns partial stock in Kadokawa and vice versa with that company. I picture Bandai execs passing a cheque in the back room following the whole event and lots of hand shaking and back patting going on as well. The real point is that I can be a fan of something and still balk at it being made into a spectacle. You'll have to post that Newtype article you talked about some time by the way. I want to see if I'm correct about how it's approached in writing and page layout. |

I'm amused that Rie Kugiyama is being awarded for supporting cast but both of the roles listed are lead roles. On another note, their definition of "new" seems questionable. Tusbasa Yonaga is the only one on the list that started in 2007. Emiri Katou may have started as early as 2004 depending on when her Kya Kara Maoh character showed up, but she started in early 06 at the absolute latest. Yu Kobayashi has at least one role dating back to 2004. Wataru Hatano has a role dating back to 2003 (Maburaho). That's new? |

I was waiting for this report to show up on ANN but looks like two opponents of the award have already beat me to it.
Regardless of whether the award heavily favors the sponsors (Kadokawa, etc.) or not, I don't think any of the award winners are undeserving of their award. Many of the nominees and their performances are on-par with each other. It could have gone either ways for many of these awards. All the seiyuu nominated are very talented and the all the winners definitely have a case for their winning based on the roles that they played. Hopefully this award can have participants and sponsors from everyone in the industry and thus provide a bit more objectivity in the future. |

Let me clarify, Kaioshin_Sama - I did not see the VN article in question. However, I will tell you the whole story which led to my bitterness over the whole affair.
I was hanging around the live update thread + a bunch of other seiyu-related threads over at 2channel starting 4pm Japan time to catch the latest buzz amongst the fans (the actual awards ceremony started at around 6pm). Around 5pm-ish, somebody waltzed in and posted what he claimed was the winners' list. A lot of people, me included, were initially dismissive of the guy's claims so we just waited for the 'real results' with bated breath. The first result was announced at around 6.10pm & reported by some fans who were updating from the event via mobile phone. Best female newcomer, here we go. And boom - Katou Emiri, a name which was on the leaked list. A few minutes later, Kobayashi Yu - another name on the list. Of course, about 50 minutes later all the results were out and the award winners matched the ones that were in the leaked list 100%. At that point I had already more or less completed my writeup covering the results and I rolled it out at 7.25pm, before there was any official news coverage on the event by any of the media sites. The new issue of Voice Newtype hit newsstands today but I don't live in Japan so I will likely only get to see it in a few weeks' time. But hey, look at the cover! How the heck would they have done that special Seiyu Awards feature if they didn't already know weeks in advance about the winners (presumably they don't write articles and print off the magazine at the speed of light). |

The photo of Hirano seems to be taken when she still had long hair. The time she cut it was around the middle of February, and considering how she often times has to backlog some diary entries, what with her busy schedule, the photo shoot for the VN cover has to have been done at least early February. It would have made more sense for Mamoru Miyano to win last year for Tamaki and Light. He's great, but his performances in the roles he won for are nothing special. But then, I guess it is all a moot point anyway.

Well I get the sense that most of Japan knows, but doesn't care, kind of like with Famitsu's reviews, where they just right what people want to read without regard for bias and spin. As I understand it, journalistic integrity and unbiased reporting are more of a courtesy in Japan then a standard. I recall hearing that NHK news can at times make Fox News look like the CBC (For non-Canadians that's the state owned Canadian Broadcasting Corportation which is noted for being the high watermark of journalism in Canada and almost every journalism students desired job). Two thoughts immediately come to mind when I see that cover. The first is that Rie Kugimiya looks really depressed, almost as if she doesn't want to be a part of this (she looks like she's trying to force a smile. Incidently I rarely see her ever smile in any photograph and I get the sense she's mostly strict business and doesn't want to be an idol type. She's also one of the least made up and plainest dressers I've ever seen for such a popular seiyuu), and the second is the question of why Aya Hirano looks whiter then I do when I look in the mirror. |
