Takahashi has been consistently continuing Captain Tsubasa ever since 2000, only taking a year-long break between each series (Road to 2002, Golden 23, both parts of Kaigai Gekitou-hen, & Rising Sun). Wild to think that this franchise will actually be coming to its end in the coming years, though I guess after trying to be a part of the Olympics what else can you really do with Tsubasa, outside of him becoming a coach or manager? |

In the first Tsubasa manga he was between a kid and teen. In World Youth he was a young adult who gets married in the finale. In Road to 2002 onwards he remained as an adult with the latest manga revealing he is a father. |

I sorta stopped following Cap. Tsubasa around the time he moved to Brazil (so ages ago) but as far as football/soccer hierarchy goes, the Olympic Tournament is like... 3rd rate at best. It goes World Cup > the Confederation Cup, in this case the AFC Cup > Olympics Tournament, and that's not even counting club football, the UEFA Champions League and even the Libertadores is miles ahead of Olympic Football in prestige. Nobody cares. Teams must be under 23 y-o so they tend to lack experience and be comprised of mostly subs on the main team, with a few starters. The Summer Olympics fall in the same years as the Copa America and Euro Cup, which are played a few months prior, so European and South American teams are often checked out after playing for keeps in the big tournament and couldn't care less about this little Olympic tournament that's keeping them from enjoying what's left of their vacation, the fans also mostly don't care, it's got very little prestige so people will laugh off a bad campaign as who cares, it's the Olympics" and celebrate a win with "that's neat I guess". Just about all who care are the South Korea team (medals = no military service, can move to Europe sooner) and a few underdog teams (mostly from Oceania and Africa) who play like they have nothing to lose. Like, I know Tsubasa eventually moves to spoiler[Barcelona]. That means he played El Clássico, Champions League, you name it. Olympics Tournament is a massive step down and kind of a bizarre place to cap the series. Shouldn't the obvious choice be the World Cup? |

I always wondered just how long could the story of Tsubasa could go on. I grew up watching Captain Tsubasa J and Road to 2002 when I was very young. I even saw some episodes of the 2018 version. Maybe some day they'll adapt the whole story in anime form, perhaps in 2026 for the next World Cup.
