My hope is they raised the rate for everyone and not just Buhr to get her back, but I know reality isn't as nice

I don't think dubbing pay rates work that way and I seriously doubt Buhr would stand for only herself getting a raised rate. Plus another member of the Bookworm cast, Joe Zieja, was also pretty vocal about about Crunchyroll's payrates for dubs and he's confirmed back for S3.

I am with MagicPolly; it would be nice if Crunchyroll raised pay rates for VA's.

I'm glad Reba and Joe were able to come back. It would've been pretty jarring to have your lead character recast without the excuse of health issues like with Billy Kametz.

I hope they raise their pay rates as well...

Pleased this is sorted out, shouldn't be any other concerns for any show on CR like this for a little bit until maybe Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 but thats some way off for now (and thats assuming the streaming rights heading that way again).

Certainly doesn't solve the pay problems for those in the Texas studio however, given they can budget for the pay raise here (even if it seems that the studio is responsible for it).

Eh maybe for the principals for this particular show, but I’m not holding out hope aside from outside contracted dubs for CR. Studios like Bang Zoom, Studiopolis, etc… can pay the $125 rate because LA talent can demand it with leverage and the individual studios will take the pay hit while in-house dubs in TX are probably “here’s your base rate, take it or leave it.” We saw that happening even when TX dubs were super diverse location-wise (LA actors getting much higher rates, now it’s just split across different projects rather than within the same show.

CR has already been awful lately to their talent by essentially shutting out concerns from local actors regarding recording practices/safety measures for immunocompromised people (see Madeline Morris’ tweets over the past couple weeks about the radio silence). I expect the same treatment regarding wages.

Yeah, I'm inclined to think this sort of thing would be on a show-by-show basis. Anything new or with a cast that was already in Texas probably won't have a whole lot of leverage on the actor side. We might also see a bit of a PR announcement from the company along the lines of, "We've heard the concerns and decided to do our part, etc." if Crunchyroll decided to do this across the board.

I can't say I'm too surprised about what you mentioned in the second paragraph. It's pretty much in line with how most places have taken the approach that "living with Covid" means doing little to nothing, as opposed to going forward with at least some basic precautions being standard. To me, it's especially disappointing to hear that since Funimation was out front with dubbing from home and figuring out how to keep going safely. Then again, even the most cautious people seem to have more or less given up, so I guess it shouldn't surprise me.

Your explanation is 100% right.

Reba Buhr is staying on as Myne for season 3 because she successfully negotiated a higher rate. Based on what she tweeted, Crunchyroll upped the rate for the whole show, which means better pay for all voice actors. https://twitter.com/rebabuhr/status/1525314945927110657

And if that's really the case, this might be a rare instance of Crunchyroll doing the right thing.

According to Brittany Lauda of Kocha Sound, the US$125 union rate comes out of the pockets of the recording studios (Bang Zoom for Ascendance of a Bookworm), not from Crunchyroll themselves, just like you said. Crunchyroll budget by the episode and have nothing to do with the voice actors' hourly rates. Crunchyroll's offer basically translates to US$75 and they will happily ignore any studio who try to negotiate a higher rate. https://twitter.com/BrittanyLaudaVO/status/1525922785633107968

The fight for fair wages still has a long way to go.
