Yeah, I pretty much agree with this entire review. Hell, we never even learn Kai's name until an hour and ten minutes into the story! I actually think the movie would have been better had it cut out the whole gang wars thing and made it just about Hibiki and his friends, that way there'd be time to develop the cast and flesh them out. And I also agree that Hibiki's issues with auditory processing disorder were the absolute best part of the movie and I wish more had been done with it.

This review pretty much confirms my first impressions and worries of the movie, that it'd be all animation spectacle and "BY THE STUDIO AND DIRECTOR OF ATTACK ON TITAN" and no plot or character. I'll still probably watch it just because, but I'm glad my expectations never got very high

I'm sorry if I come off like a jackass, but I think Gen Urobuchi's best days are behind him. Hell, he wasn't even the sole screenwriter in this movie. His name was used purely for advertising purposes!
But don't just to take my word for it and watch the Godzilla anime trilogy to see how badly this man's career has degenerated.

You go watch Kamen Rider Gaim, Expelled from Paradise and all seasons and movies of Thunderbolt Fantasy. He's still pretty good. Just not doing anime (and he shouldn't really. If he's happy with Thunderbolt Fantasy, which he is. he should continue doing what he wants)

I'm not sure why people keep blaming him for things that he had very limited involvement with. For a contrasting example, Thunderbolt Fantasy is the best thing he's made, and it had a third season recently and a fourth is coming.

Ok I am sorry but I am absolutely agree with the first post here.
Yes Gen CAN make good shows when he wants to still....... but thats the problem.
I seriously think he doesn't want to make anime anymore, just like he absolutely doesn't want to do vns anymore.
Was he involved in anything madoka for almost a decade despite the series still doing new stuff without anything from him, NO. Psychopass has he had any involement in over 5 years or salvaging the utter trainwreck that psychopass 2 ended up being despite providing "planning supervision"....NO.
The guy to me is the george rr martain of anime. He just wants to play around with his new toys his fame has bought him that he is currently interested in. OHH I want to do a special effects shows, OHH I want to do CGI KAIJU, OHHH I want to play with Puppets!
I am sure thunderbolt is fantastic and maybe the other two godzilla movies aren't god awful , and maybe fruit jesus is a fantastic special effects show. But is it to much to ask him to GIVE A &%@~ about anything close to what people originally liked him for?

Weak characters and no plot/conflict are the two things I can't forgive in any medium. I don't care much about the visuals, except when they are so bad that they actively chip away at the enjoyment. I don't mind if only one of them is missing (plot carries the show or characters carry the show) but when it's both it makes the entire story-telling experience pointless. Based on this review, you couldn't pay me enough to watch this movie. Urobuchi should probably start being more careful about where he puts his name into because there are only so many times you can sell your fame before it runs out.

Urobuchi is gonna be fine. All his fans love Gaim and Thunderbolt Fantasy. The projects he's actually involved in. TF is doing well and won't stop doing well because of stuff like this or those Godzilla movies by Polygon
And no, he's under no obligation to come back to anime. He's an adult man with free will. And he's free to work on what he wants if he isn't harming anyone and it's what he wants and likes to do. He shouldn't be forced to do anime only because that's what made him famous or whatever. Anime fans aren't Urobuchi's bosses. Anime fans have 0 right to tell him what to do, and complaining about it like the man is your slave or something is pathetic

Depends on what you actually mean when you say that. Are you saying he is slowing down and resting on his laurels, maybe, I don't know. Or are you saying he is increasingly incapable of producing quality work.
Just because some shows bomb or are not as expected, doesn't mean that it was the writing. Sound design, casting choices, the actual animation, and the editing process all could be to blame, or a spiral of death with many of these factors, including the writing.
Another thing to consider, is the work only a pay day, is the work a passion project, and/or is the work something you liked to work on. Sometimes the work is only a payday, sadly much like Bruce Willis's recent filmography.
Thunderbolt Fantasy is still great for me. So perhaps this is his passion project.

So as I watched this film the comment "lacks dramatic tension" from the review kept ringing in my ears. Pretty? Well, sort of. Well-animated? Yes. Boring? Yes.
Also isn't this the least obtrusive score Sawano Hiroyuki has written?

You know what no, I don't think it is unresaonable to say Hey urobuchi can you please give a toss about anime and manga stuff again instead of all this other stuff that is your current vanity project please.
It's like george rr martin going, hey I PROMISE I am working on the next game of thrones book, in the mean time go watch my new mini series on the SCI FI channel! and be sure to check out MADOKA GACHA GAME EVENT, and watch the new season of psychopass by the author of season 2 and remember he TOTALLY didn't beat his wife.
Either do something yourself in anime and manga or just LEAVE already like you obviously want to. I honestly don't think that is an unreasonable position

It's been confirmed he didn't write script for Bubble

It is unreasoable to force Urobuchi back into anime and manga . The Madoka movie 4 thing isn't even his fault. He had the goddamn script ready since so long ago that he must've started shortly after Rebellion. I don't see how Magia Record or Psycho Pass 2 figure into this
If he wants to leave anime great. If he wants to come back, also great. He's free to do what he wants. Stop acting like a creep idol fan who found out his fave has a boyfriend. Uro can do what he damn well pleases. He's not an slave to the masses
Imagine calling passion projects he loves doing "vanity projects" only because you don't like they aren't anime. Were Shin Godzilla or the Cutie Honey live action movie vanity projects by Anno? Are Shin Kamen Rider and Shin Ultraman vanity projects? Uriobuchi is far from the only famous writer to go into other mediums ,. I don't understand being this angry than an author can do what he wants instead of being an slave to the masses. Clearly he should be writing slavery rape revenge isekai to please the masses instead of doing what he wants to do
