While I do get being unimpressed with the OLED Switch, especially if you already have one, a lot of the strong reactions seem to be because people let themselves get carried away with rumors. I watch quite a bit of video game youtube channels, but after a while I tuned out any discussion of new Switch Pro rumors because they were just that, rumors. Since I decided to just wait and see what, if anything, Nintendo announced officially, it was pretty easy to just shrug about it. I certainly wasn't complaining that it wasn't something that Nintendo never said it would be.

Yeah, that was the thing that really killed me about some of vitriol is it was really from people who hang around gaming and techbro Youtube too much. Acting like "Nintendo did not do what this rumor said they were going to do!" is a valid complaint is asinine. And as said in the article, it's possible a Pro might have been in the cards but then the pandemic and chip shortage hit (the latter of which is predicted to last to 2023) so I can see Furukawa sitting down with the hardware engineers and going "Y'know, why don't we just restart the whole thing, wait out the shortage, skip a Pro, and just launch the Switch's successor with a full boost instead?"
I could totally see them waiting it out to 2023, even 2024, for their next console while Sony and MS are having fight over parts and dealing with slower than expected sales. Plus with the whole chip shortage a lot of devs are going to have to hold back on going whole hog into the new gen stuff and going to have to do crossgen titles for a bit longer.
As for Sony, this is yet another indicator that companies should stop trying to force a normal hype cycle in the current reality. They did not need a whole Playstation Direct for these, especially since Deathloop has been done to death at them. They could have just sent out some press materials and leave it at that. Plus Sony is just so bad at copying the Directs; they even had a narrator who just didn't sound as genuine as Nintendo's employees. But as I said, it's more that they need to stop trying to do normal hype cycles. You have to adjust, so adjust already.

Switch OLED: I gotta admit, seeing the reaction of everyone who was invested on the rumors was pretty entertaining. While it's perfectly understandable to be dissapointed with the new model, at the same, time the amount of hate thrown at Nintendo feels unjustified this time, they never announced the development of a more powerful Switch, the leakers were probably just throwing some false rumors to gain more attention. From a business standpoint Nintendo probably doesn't want to fragment their userbase, the New 3DS wasn't that big of a success from what I recall, and they still have a lot of first party games coming soon. Still, the fact that the Switch is underpowered is still a major problem for developers who want to release new titles that are also coming to PS and Xbox, but games like MH: Rise, Momotaro Dentetsu and Minecraft have demonstrated that third-parties can sell well on the platform, but despite the Switch's success the third-party support has been very scarce, even compared to previous Nintendo consoles like the Wii and 3DS. Perhaps a true Switch successor will come out in 2 or 3 years, though I don't think it'll be near PS5 or XSX in terms of power.

I do totally agree that the backlash has gotten out of hand....That said (looks at age of calamity) The switch was underpowered 5 years ago, and by this point it is getting to be anemic in terms of power. Now 70% of games can easily run on the system assuming the person porting them over isn't an idiot. But now we are having issues with series that have Nintendo characters in them.
You really can't pre order any switch games anymore because the first question is always, does it actually run on the system, and you need to see the reviews first in order to find out.
I think most people would have been happy if it just gave the system a little (docked) shot of power so that there weren't so many problems with all the ports of games that we keep seeing constantly.
The problem would then become some idiot porter would make it so that the game barely playable on the new model and totally unplayable on the older one. like with hyrule warriors 3ds.
I don't think that asking for a mid generational upgrade so it could be more stable is to much to ask especially when "supposedly" the video chip the switch needed was phased out for being underpowered.
Honestly I am going to laugh if modders get ahold of the new model and make it do docked 4k or run terrible ports at 720p and 30 fps
I don't think the actual switch userbase ever thinks or even wants it to do ps5 or series x stuff. but it would be nice for it to do 1080p 30 fps docked atleast without praying to god to bless every port that you actually want to play on the switch.

Maybe it's just because I don't play many western games, but I've yet to run into this problem. I hear stuff like Ark, Overwatch, Witcher, and other western games run like crap on it, but I haven't had any issue with any of the first party titles or exclusives so far. The only ports I'm familiar with are the old FInal Fantasy and Resident Evil ones, which run fine for me.

Well keep in mind by the time the New 3DS had been announced I believe the system had or was close to selling over 100 million copies so there wasn't much to add on to that.
Plus unless you were a big fan of the SNES or Xenoblade Chronicles or The Rebirth Of Issac there wasn't much reason to buy the New 3DS. I also think there was weird shit like Nintendo initially not selling chargers with the XL version of the system.

I'm astonished at how many people seem surprised by the whole "no 4K Switch" thing. That might be possible (though extremely unlikely) in a successor platform, but for just a hardware upgrade? Insane. The Switch can't even do 720p/30fps consistently. When we inevitably do get that inevitable "Switch Pro," I'd expect it to be able to run flagship titles (like BotW2) at 1080p/30fps at the most.

Most of the games people complain about are Japanese... Monster Hunter Stories most recently, Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity most frequently, and Xenoblade Chronicles most notoriously.
