Curious what the uproarious material turns out to have been.
Maybe one of the monsters too closely resembles Winnie the Pooh.

From what I’ve seen the scene in question is literally a pun on knees, like “what’s wrong with your knees? Chi-knees” (Chinese)... it’s as absurd as a movie getting pulled in America for saying “what’s wrong with your cans? Ameri-cans!... it’s absurd but it seems that’s pretty par for course when it comes to inane reasons why something creates drama and is pulled from the Chinese market.
That said can’t say that level of humor bolds well for the quality of the movie, I was expecting it to be bad but it’s like they’re banking on “so bad it’s good”.

It was a racist joke that surprisingly upset the population to an enormous degree.
Can't blame them though, the joke was beyond awful. I'm glad the movie got pulled if only for that alone.
If we're lucky this will ruin Paul W. S. Anderson's career and he won't make anymore terrible movies. No Resident Evil where it got 6+ sequels here thankfully.

It's amazing how China expects the rest of the world to deal with them, yet get angry over this. For being a " racist joke" its incredibly tame. I was expecting something worse, given this is Paul"put my OC into a movie" Ws Anderson were talking about. Never planned on seeing the movie, but China is ridiculous

They can be as ridiculous as they want in this case. They killed a terrible and the career of a man who's entire career is just terrible movies.
I am thankful to them for once.
C'mon even if you don't think the joke was that racist, it was still a just terrible pun. Puns are the lowest form of comedy and that has to be the lowest joke in existence.

True. Who the heck thought this was a good idea? Monster Hunter would have been perfect as a CGI american or Japanese movie, or even straight anime. I'm convinced CAPCOM rolls with the money from remakes to fund his stuff in some ironic bit of marketing.

Yeah if you think this bad pun of a joke is going to end Anderson's career you must've not have seen what happened with Micheal Bay regarding Mudflap & Skids in Transformers 2. Hollywood has blacklisted other directors for much worse.

I was under the pretense a fraction of this board hated CGI films along with American productions of Japanese IPs. As for it being straight anime did you forget Monster Hunter: Ride On?

.....Why would a game studio use money earned from their business ventures to fund the separate business venture of a guy who doesn't work for the company?
Also I maybe wrong but in many cases if you're making a film adaptation of a work typically you have to pay the IP holders for the rights.

The movie's hardly dead, nor is anyone's career over this (except for maybe the government screener who passed this through without anticipating the outcry). "A new version is being produced overnight, and should be the one screened." It'll be back in theaters in a day or two.

..You realize you've come up with a pun about boobs right? And are comparing a boob pun with what is being taken as a racist joke?

Anderson is famous for making bad movies but keep getting jobs because his movie make money. However due to the COVID situation, this movie won't sell much tickets in the West, so it need to compensate by selling tickets in China. So no, he won't get fire because his joke, but his career will sure take a hit since he now lost the only thing that keep landing him a job, the profit.

Yeah I saw the clip and I have got to say that it is such a terrible pun that adds nothing to the movie apart from having some kind of racist joke in it.
No surprise though considering the director is literal garbage

Sincere question: I get the bad pun part (FWIW, comedy is subjective and I love bad puns), but I genuinely don't understand how "Chi-knees" is racist. Can someone please explain?

Per another article, there is a racist nursery rhyme along the lines of chinese Japanese dirty knees. So they believe the joke is a reference to that.

I didn’t know and had to look up why the Chinese viewers were so upset about a pun about knees, growing up in Florida I never once heard that rhyme so I was at an utter loss as to what this was all about. You’ll have to forgive me, the last insult that I read getting China in an uproar was when a virtual YouTuber read off the country Taiwan’s YouTube viewership stats so I took it with a grain of salt.
