Uh-oh. I purchased two copies of Flag volume 2 tonight. One for my sister and one for myself. She had purchased a copy last week and found her it to be defective. When she took it back to the store to get a new copy the store clerk found that all of the ones she checked were defective.

Haven't got my Eureka 7 yet but I'll be ticked if it's bad... just not suprised.
Bandai-ent. has the absolute worst replicators and quality control I've ever seen. in the past 4 years I've had to return at least 8 discs (these are just what I can think of off hand too, there are probably ones I forgot.) This isn't counting the .hack//LOT DVD that wouldn't play on certain model DVD players that they wouldn't fix and replace, a few missing extras, a broken case (a chunk missing from case in the shrink wrap). Also I bought the Zeta Gundam boxed set and I'm still real upset about the inferior subtitles as opposed to the redone ones on the individual releases. I won't even mention the music changes... PS. Someone should tell them to update the releases on their website since it's been over a month since they've posted any. Seriously, you couldn't tell they're releasing anything from looking at their site since last month. |

I remember buying the Saber Marionette J Boxed Set, virtually all of the Discs were loose and stratched because the "Teeth" were damaged, not that is was packaged poorly in shipping, just that the DVD Cases were cheap. Glad Bandai don't have much Interlace Problems with their DVD's nowadays. |

I've had to return two DVD's to them (one was Gundam SEED Destiny vol. 10), and one time they even sent me the wrong DVD back! Isn't Bandai an no-bid company, just the front for Bandai series...es in America? That's why I love the free market system: if a company makes an inferior product, the company doesn't last (RIP Geneon). It's these no-bid companies that just shill whatever they want knowing we have to buy it if we want the product. I'd curse Bandai up and down if it weren't for the fact that I'm a hopeless Gundam fanboy. Even worse, our only other recourse is to get fansubs, and the companies have the legal edge on that too!

When the Escaflowne thinpack came out I returned it twice and each time 7 of the 8 DVD's would either skip frequently or wouldn't play at all. I also had the .hack//LOT DVD that wouldn't play on certain model DVD players. Add in the fact that they've been grossly overcharging on some of their most recent releases and I can safely say that I'm centimeters from refusing to buy their products.

I remember I had to send a number of the Zeta Gundam re-releases back because they would lock up my DVD players... although I'm not quite sure if the last post isn't confusing Bandai Entertainment and Bandai Visual's releases again. The two labels are apparently to some extent different and separate subsets of one overarching company...

How are these DVDs manifesting their problems? I've noticed that often in the past some DVDs only work on certain players making it a DVD compatibility issue. For example the End of Evangelion wouldn't play on my Sony, so I looked it up and discovered it was a known and documented problem. I also have a few of those infamous Bandai bricks, but never had an issue, while those with issues tend to have them with a number of collections.
Flag played fine on the Oppo970 until the break between the second and third episode where it couldn't find the next chapter. I attempted to start the third episode from the menu, but it still couldn't lock onto the track. I then tried to play the DVD in my HD-DVD player but lost my patience during the loading screen. It might have worked if I waited longer since the Toshiba takes so long to "boot up" and takes even longer to load a disc. I thought it would be a poor choice to experiment on since I might need to stop and even power down while poking around a problematic disc. I then threw it into the PS3 which loaded it right away. I went to the third episode from the menu where it played fine until the press conference where it froze. I then went back out to the scene selection and "rewound" back from the eyecatch to the problematic part and watched the rest uninterrupted. I watched the last volume of Destiny today on the Oppo and it played fine until the gap between the third and fourth episode when it once again couldn't find the next track. I decided to try accessing the episode from the scene selection and was able to skip to the beginning of the A Part and rewound to the start of the last episode. The rest of the episode played without any problems. I will probably post my findings on My-Otome and Eureka Seven in the next couple days, but really want to watch the last DVDs for Tsubasa Chronicles and Suzuka first. There are discs have issues playing with specific players (Fate/Stay 5 didn't play on my Oppo as well) but usually the incompatible list is really small and tend to be with the PS2 or X-box DVD players. This current batch of DVDs however seem to be unfriendly to a good number of players which is a big problem. |

The difference here is that there was a huge piece of the case broken off. The disc and other included materials were ok (it was a Haruhi LE w/ CD and the CD case was fine.) The broken case was shrink wrapped and the missing piece wasn't inside the wrapper and the disc was mostly secured (thankfully). If it were a few scratches from broken teeth, like my Wolf's Rain, I could understand it but the disc was obviously wrapped and packed broken and any visual inspection before shovinh it into the box would have noticed it. There were also some missing extras in the package too. I cringe every time I hear them announce a license now and this has certainly cost them quite a few of my dollars since there are a few of those "borderline" titles that I can live without and if it there is another title from another company competing, I'm certainly not buying the Bandai one. |

Well, then I guess I should hold on Flag and My-Otome for now.
Typo...

My copy of My-Otome v4 won't play or be read by my PS3. My Mac ejects the disk. I wonder what the solution is going to be? An exchange program direct with Bandai?

I attempted to play Flag #2 on my Toshiba. It would load the menu and all that but when I attempted to play part 1 of the third episode on the disk the player would do a rapid rattle and freeze up. On my iMac the computer would attempt to read the disk for a minute or so then give up and spit the disk back out. This happened to both copies of Flag #2 which I purchased on Friday evening. |

My Gundam Seed Destiny volume 12 is refusing to load in any of my players. I guess this does not bode well for my Eureka Seven vol. 11 which has yet to ship. Hopefully Bandai will make the inevitable process of replacing the discs quick and painless.

I'm in the process of collecting a number of anime DVDs from Bandai Entertainment. For now, I'll probably refrain from buying DVDs reported to be defective.

Robert's Anime Corner Store's blog claims that over 20% of these Bandai discs they shipped were reported defective. That's a serious replicator error. They also make a point of mentioning that it's the 3rd Gundam Seed Destiny with some sort of encoding error.
When the people selling your wares start comparing you to companies that have gone under you should really take heed. Even with Lucky Star and Code Geass in the pipe, bandai has the weakest upcoming catalog of the major distributors. I doubt they can afford to lose too many sales, especially on the titles I mentioned. |

My Gundam SEED Destiny vol. 12 disk is one of the messed up copies. My 2 Macs, my PC, my Toshiba DVD player, and my Xbox 360 won't even recognize the disk at all. My ps3 and ps2 both play the disk fine until it gets to the final episode (ep. 50). After being rather upset about being cut off at the very very last episode, I was finally able to get that last episode to play on my Dad's new stand alone Sony BluRay player that he got for Christmas. I'm just so glad that I got closure on the series, so the wait for a replacement disk won't be so bad.
