The real question is ... will this decision be revoked after the olympics ?
I really hope so because this cleaning the image of Japan to the eyes of foreigners is starting to get a little too ... ehm ... "Invasive" . |

I dont know what they are doing. They have removed several of my favorite sports in Tokyo in the last two years. I DO NO feel like going back ever.

Someone clearly added up how much money they'll lose from tourists who have strong negative views on adult magazines, compared that to the amount of money they'll bring in on adult magazine sales between now and 2020, and decided this based on which number was bigger. |

This could have a lot of negative effects in a lot of rural areas where there are very few other outlets to find adult manga magazines (assuming they do include them in the removals). Where I lived, the only places that had them were an adult store an hour away by walking and these convenience stores. There was a book store that sold them, but they rarely ever had anything in stock.
And in turn, if this fear is founded, it could have a lot of consequential effects on adult magazine sales overall--if not immediately, then definitely down the line when they fail to find a reliable number of new fans and end up depending solely on their current fanbase, which will only hold up so much. Adult content artists struggle enough as it is to compete... *sigh* That said, the Japanese adult industry (not talking about manga this time) does need to change, not just for foreigners, but for the sake of the Japanese adult industry itself. As much as I have a fetish for some not-so-savory stuff that only Japan makes, I'm extremely disappointed at the controversial methods of production they use to make it (ie. dubious contracts, conformity pressure on female actresses, corruption and skirting the rules, outsourcing, etc.). Foreign adult industries are not much better, but at the very least, Japan has a lot of potential to make positive changes without necessarily removing entire genres of content. Pressure from the Olympics might be the way to do that. ...Or they could just let the pressure get to them and go overboard with censorship and/or cutting the market down. |

That's wrong. Don't remove adult content, just add more hardcore BL. It's offensive to say that gender/sex/whatever is an excuse for not liking porn, or that women are too dumb to like porn. .... but they don't actually want to "welcome" anyone, they just want to avoid bad press in cowardly places like Britain that are offended by things like that. If you want to learn what "welcome" looks like, go to Animate Ikebukuro and check their giant, explicit Playboy Bitch Club posters (which is a BL, in case you didn't remember). I was thinking of that nico nico MAD video I used to see around about going to a convenience store when I read the article and title. All I have to say is that I hope it comes back after the Olympics. I mean, yeah R18+ content isn't important but if it's going to affect sales then it is.

That's going to bite them in the tush, people from the Middle East might be attending the Olympics and seeing all that BL is certainly going to offend them. That kind of censorship is clumsier than current year Sony. |

It's good to known that this is more national-image Olympics-panic and not one more easy entry-level public crusade against "Invitations to sexual deviancy" on mainstream Tokyo streets that inevitably lead You-Know-Where. 
Not that some folks won't try to spin it that way anyway, and try to keep the momentum going into '21, citing magazines as the "gateway drug" to other potential social problems, for shock value. They don't sell much at 7-Elevens over here either, but that's because the Internet has already pretty much wiped print-adult media and their sales off the face of the earth for a good ten or fifteen years now. Another point militantly prudish and scapegoating Japanese are well aware of. |

I have to say all the theories about more censorship being related to the Olympics seems a lot more likely when a 20,000 store franchise comes out and simply says that their stores will no longer stock adult magazines because of the Olympics. Than again a taste of western style censorship could act as a good inoculation and it is still 18 months away from the actual games so this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I can kinda understand where they are coming from. I even saw adult manga magazines with hardcore fetish or loli material unsealed just displayed at an adult shelf at a convenience store at a height even children could easily reach.
All it takes are some western people noticing them, taking photos and posting it on social media to cause some uproar following many issues. But I really hope they will slowly revert this back after the olympics. It was pretty convenient to quickly look through them and subtly get them together with other stuff for check out instead of having to go to a bookstore or even a store specially for adult material.
