Talking about Mahou Shoujo, Fuuka and Rinne from ViVid Strike are very intense main characters. Although I would consider that to be more of an anime about a female division of the MMA with transformation sequences rather than a proper mahou shoujo.
Yuuri from Girls Last Tour comes to mind being an easy going character in a post apocalyptic wasteland setting takes a lot of "strength" as well. Well, both leads have to be super strong. |

I was thinking of both Chito and Yuuri from Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko before I saw Jose's post. Often we equate "strength" with physical prowess like Balsa shows in Moribito. But it would take an enormous amount of mental "strength" to survive in the wasteland Chito and Yuuri explore.

Here's my list derived from the titles covered so far from my Beautiful Fighting Girl thread. I'm only including the ones I think warrant being here.
Sally Yumeno, Sally the Witch: she's the first TV anime female protagonist, the first TV magical girl and a self-assured wilful girl at that. Bored with life in the magical realm she comes to earth where she uses her magic to help her friends and keep the bad guys in their place. Cleopatra, Cleopatra: she may be conquered by two Roman generals but the queen of Egypt is quite the character. Nozomi Mine, Wandering Sun: she's anime's first idol star in a surprisingly serious take on the industry. She must overcome being switched with another child at birth, various tribulations when entering such a competitive industry, and a rival (the other baby) determined to bring her down. Hiromi Oka, Aim for the Ace!: another first, she's the original female protagonist of a sports anime. Hiromi begins as clumsy girl clueless about tennis. She will grow in ability, self-awareness and stature over the course of the series, overcoming her rivals across Japan. More to come. |

Errinundra―
How little things change ─ when I was first working on the Anime Index I choked on your 1st post; now I'm choking on your latest post..... I have processed the following posts:
Touma― Are you nominating FMP!: The Second Raid? Modakawa― Are you nominating/endorsing Sailor Moon &/or Madoka Magica? If so, then please list the character(s). Jose Cruz― Are you nominating ViVid Strike and Girls Last Tour? yuna49― Are you similarly nominating/endorsing Girls Last Tour? |

I forgot this was a list-making thread. Sure, I'll nominate Girls' Last Tour.

I'll second Girls' Last Tour - my favourite anime TV show since 2011 gave us the trio of Hyouge Mono, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Bunny Drop.
New nominations: Simone Lorraine, The Star of the Seine: fights as a masked crusader for the downtrodden citizens of Paris against the rapacious aristocrats. She begins as a flower girl and ends up as an emancipated warrior for justice. Still with the French Revolution, but produced some four years later. I can't believe no one has nominated Oscar François de Jarjayes, The Rose of Versailles: one of anime's most beloved and powerful heroines, who is commander of the palace guard, heart-throb to the men and women of the court, and eventual leader of the revolutionary forces assaulting the Bastille. Chie Takemoto, Chie the Brat: A yakuza mob turns up to beat up her father and leaves fleeced of all their cash by the way too savvy for her age, Chie. Her absent mother and uncaring father have forced her to become self-sufficient, while the ever present violence of life in the underbelly of 1960s Osaka has left her with hair-trigger emotional reflexes. Her aggressive approach to life is spiced by outrage at the injustices perpetrated upon her and leavened with a possibly misguided yearning for a better life with her reconciled parents. Kathy Flint, Animal Treasure Island: As the one and only female character in the entire film, there is little that is conventionally feminine about her other than she wears a dress. The quality I like most is her autonomy. She has her own agenda - getting her hands on the treasure - and, initially, she doesn't want anybody's help to get it. Kathy is resolute, loyal and courageous under fire, on occasion leaving Jim Hawkins in her wake as bullets fly about. Kathy is a modern heroine to Jim's more traditional hero. And... did I mention there's more to come? |

The most recent episode of the current remake of Blade of the Immortal raised teen-aged Rin up a rank in my eyes. She hires the other main character, Manji, as a bodyguard because she knows she has limited fighting skills. However she turns out to have other skills which were on full display in this week's episode nine.
Let me also nominate Ange from Princess Principal. All the other girls have their strengths, but Ange is in a class of her own. In the opening episode she spoiler[shoots a guy in cold blood, after taking out an insurance policy on him to benefit his hospitalized sister]. I don't recall being as surprised by a scene as that one in quite some time. By the way, I've added SSL support to my website (thank you, Let's Encrypt!), so the issue raised a year ago is no longer pertinent. |

It's not an anime (yet), but I think Xena: Warrior Princess would make a great anime series. Or a series of movies. I'm working through season 1 now.

I'd draw the line on Beatrice myself. There's an episode where Ange turns off Beato's voice box when Ange tired of her whining. Both my friend and I who were watching together cheered Ange's decision. But sure, if you want to include the whole team I wouldn't object. |

I don't know if anyone has mention these girls yet, but I would like mention the six main girls of the Senki Zessho Symphogear series: Hibiki Tachibana, Tsubasa Kazanari, Chris Yukine, Maria Cadenzavna Eve, Shirabe Tsukuyomi, and Kirika Akatsuki. These girls spend five seasons fighting Eldritch Abominations, Alchemists, Terrorists, and God-like beings with Katanas, Chain Swords, Rocket-powered Deathscythes, Buzzsaws, an armies worth of ammunition, and even their own fists all while singing J-pop songs. Also one of the these girls suplexed a Space Shuttle.
