Now, and I'm sure King Micah will back me up on this, Ai Yori Aoshi was a major disappointment in Pioneer's line-up especially as it took the company's harem mantle off the shoulders of the long-lived and much loved Tenchi Muyo series.

While it started off as one of the most promising romance comedies of the domestic year, it quickly degraded (by the end of the first disc, no less) to a Love Hina knock-off with a slightly less different cast.

Now there is a sequel series heading for broadcast, and doubtless it will be licensed by Pioneer/Geneon, but how many of you out there actually think that it could revert back to being the lovely heartfelt love story we got in the first three episodes?

One can always hope! But, I hoped and hoped and hoped for the series to revert back to its first 3 episodes and it never did. Crying or Very sad

I was really hyped for Ai Yori Aoshi. I even went out and bought the dvd/box combo. The first few episodes were great, but then it turned into a Love Hina/Tenchi/harem rip off. It's really sad cause the first few eps were really good and it seemed like it would focus just Karou and Aoi's relationship. But we can't have that, so the creators introduced a bunch of unnecessary characters and made over half the episodes filler in the name of fanservice.

My hopes aren't really high for Enshi turning things around. If Ai Yori Aoshi was a short, 12 episode series that didn't have all the unnecessary characters and filler, then it would have been worth the hype. As it stands, Enshi seems like just another cash run anime.

"End rant"

I dunno, I know it's got the Harem feel, but at least the main relationship was established right off the bat. As far as the series not getting better? I absolutely loved the first few episodes. And you are right that the new characters were not needed, since they didn't really drive the plot anywhere. But spread out through the series, there were always occasional parts that made (for me anyway) the entire series worth buying.

As far as the license on Enishi goes Crayest, it was licensed before the first episode was broadcast IIRC. (on the last domestic release on the back of the insert, it mentions the new series)

Now, I have seen the first 5-6 eps of the new series. I'm hoping that it does bring something more back, and it may do that. I'm not optomistic that it will turn around, but I don't dislike the series either, so I'll continue watching it.

Ai Yori Aoshi should of been a six episode OVA, I even created an edit with my fansubs to make a better show. It was only the bookends. The Harem expect was completely pointless, as for once, there is no ambiguity, the male and female leads are completely in love. Enishi has some more time with Aoi than compared to many episodes of the filler. That is good, but we are seeing a reversion to the every episode a character story that hurt the original series. The original series had every episode focus on one of the girls and her relationship. It was very easy to pick up by watching the trailer to tell who was being focused on. I like that because it let me skip. Most of the filler girls seemed to be thrown in to attract more men to the show. I think attracting Lolicons should not be a priority for any anime.
Let us hope they will improve.

I'm hoping for it too, man. The supporting cast is so forgettable and their stories are such mindless rehashes that it's almost painful.

We didn't need another Love Hina, but we needed a new Tenchi or Ah! My Goddess.

Chobits came pretty close, though. But I have some issues...

The fans of the first series seem mostly concerned with how much skin "Aoi-chan" shows off, so I don't really think any serious changes would be in the producers best interest.

What about the manga version of Ai Yori Aoshi (Tokyopop Page) How does it relate to the anime?

Without having watched Love Hina and Ah! My Goddess, but having watched Tenchi, the series was what I expected. Sit down, watch, and just like Tenchi (EXCEPT the OVAs), I don't feel compelled to watch the whole thing from start to stop.

I've gotten up to Episode 8 of Enishi, and obviously not understanding too much, seems like it's the same laid-back style of most of the first season. I have a feeling the story won't pick up until the end... but then again, their website has spaces for a Special and movie, both under construction...

.. Overall, I enjoy this series... but not as well as Chobits... how long until Disc 6 comes out, and I can finally get rid of my DivX episodes??

Sorry about dragging this up, but I rather do this than start a new topic.

I saw the Ai Yori Aoshi manga today at Media Play so I flipped through it. What little I read was good, it really seemed to be more akin to the beginning of the anime.

However, once I read the preview for volume 2 my hopes were dashed. It seems like even the manga is going to have the harem aspect starting in volume 2. I'll wait and check out volume 2, but I don't have very high hopes for things to get turned around.

to get back on topic =)

I think the chances for restoration have been annihilated.
It seems the story turned its attention to our most beloved breast-hugging kinpatsu Tina Neutral And as the story only goes on for 2 more eps (from what I understood, I've seen up to 11) I think we can safely conclude that AYA has become a complete failure Sad

I saw the first season, and based on everyone else's posts in this board, I guess the second season follows the formula of the first season....

but does that make the second season a failure? I dunno.....but I didn't think the first season was a failure. I think people had certain initial expectations for Ai Yori Aoshi (as something that would "break the mold of the harem" or something like that), and this is probably due to how the show itself sort of teased out the serious relationship between Kaoru and Aoi......but I approached the series somewhat differently--as something that's fluff, but funny enough....

It's like Mahoromatic....both have serious moments (a nice touch), but I mainly watched it for the comedy....

Well, as a formulaic harem show, it succeeds quite well and I certainly would watch it over Love Hina any day of the week.

But the fact that it's coming so close on the heels of Love Hina, so close to the formula of Love Hina, and the fact that it was marketed as a more serious romance oriented series is what has disappointed so many expectant fans like myself.

And, honestly, I think there's a direct correlation between harem/romance comedy fans who want more Oh! My Goddess and harem/romance comedy fans who were disappointed by Ai Yori Aoshi.

I think that the second season did ge the pace of the series much better. Also, it is more series, there are some heart breaking moments in the show.

I was one of few who did not have a much expecations of the saga when it started (primary due to the fact that I didn't know that much about it). It does come too much like Love-Hina, still it is more mature, especally the second season.

As for more series harem anime, I wonder if the new OMG anime will be able to cover that, it may or may not. Though the manga has long grown beyonf its harem loot, can the anime adapation do the same?

We shall see...
