Quote: | The live-action film of Tite Kubo's Bleach manga opened last Friday on 329 theaters. It sold 99,000 tickets for 135 million yen (about US$1.21 million) to rank #4 in its opening weekend. |
For a CGI-heavy Japanese movie, is this a good start?

Mirai no Mirai film’s reviews so far have been pretty abysmal, yet the worst criticism I have seen is “relatively boring in Hosoda standard” and “resembles a family video than a film”, so what exactly went wrong?

No. Huge flop, especially on 329 theatres lmao. This value is way too low, which lower than latest live actions like JoJo, Tokyo Ghoul and FMA- which are considered huge disappointments. They managed to surpass 1B yen tho. If bleach cant surpass even 1B Yen in few weeks, it will be a historical laughing stock.
In comparison (With flops/opening weekend):
¥264,065,100 - FMA (Total: 1.12B):
¥231,700,00 - TG (Total: 1.06)
¥165.500,000 -JoJo (Total: More or less 1B)
¥135,000,000- Bleach
1 billion yen should be a decent success for limited film (usually late night anime films), but not for these huge franchises with large amount of theater screen . Live action especially battle ones have decent to good budgets. CGs, actors, director and musician (Alexandros) .... Not to mention TV ads, posters, mallshows, pictures on train etc.

The trailers misrepresented it a fair bit, making it look like a crowd-pleasing fantasy adventure, when it actually eschews traditional narrative for a largely plotless series of vignettes, all shown from the viewpoint of a very small child.
I'm still processing it, myself. There were some scenes I found very moving, but I'm not sure yet whether the whole measures up to the sum of its parts. Looking forward to a second viewing.

I've always enjoyed Hosoda's films and even Boy and the Beast I thought was very good, even if it wasn't as good as his previous films, so it's disappointing to learn the Mirai of the Future film isn't as good. Maybe this will finally get Hosoda to explore a different theme in his next movie because it sounds like he's running out of ideas for how to put a new spin on his family theme he's done to death.

Where did you find these reviews? Are they from the Japanese audience? Because all the western ones I found are praising it.

I just checked Rotten Tomatoes and it has a 100% score on it.

Rotten Tomatoes has ALSO given high 90-percentile scores for a lot of JUNK films so that doesn't mean much...
Frankly, nothing should be getting 100% if we're honest.
A good film is 85% or better.
Much less than 73%, then it's questionable whether it's worth your time to see the film.

Im not overreacting though (unless Bleach reach 1B yen mark) Not necessary a laughing stock on the viewers, but on the investors and business groups who didn't sponsor the movie. Summer here in Japan are stacked with big hit movies, so unless there's a miracle , Bleach will not recover

So you don't have any evidence at all that film critics hate the new Hosoda movie?

That’s not at all how rotten tomatoes works. It’s just an aggregate of officially published film and tv review scores; and a “100%” rating doesn’t mean it’s perfect, it means every reviewer at least liked said film/show. RT passes no actual critical judgement of its own.
Also, it seems as though most of the negative backlash against Mirai is due to misleading advertising. It ended up being more of a collection of vignettes about family than a sprawling fantasy adventure. All of the reception I’ve seen from western viewers lucky enough to have seen it has been overwhelmingly positive, stating it as one of Hosoda’s best. And a nice change of pace after Boy and the Beast. But if you’re looking for a fantasy, you won’t get it.
And now that we’re in the post-Your Name world, I find myself incredibly bitter over the film’s relative underperformance. Not just compared to that film but even to Hosoda’s previous. It’s not bad turnout by any means, but does irk me that an equally seasoned and revered director can’t even seem to follow that act up impressively. Come on Japan! Why so picky with the anime films you choose to see?
