Imagine if they licensed newer (anime released in Japan in the last 2 years) anime. Just saying because they have so many old-school anime titles, they might as well try to license some newer ones.

Will this benefit from a high-definition upscale? My response to the Otaku no Video project was simply to buy the existing DVD release rather the remastered version.

@Zin5ki
It is old enough that the original film masters may be available. Their older kickstarters certainly were an improvement. @Kadmos1 AnimEigo is a very small company. I doubt they are in a position to license a newer show. In fact, Gunsmith Cats is their first Bluray for a show where they did not already have the license for the DVD version. Their "oldschool" titles were not terribly oldschool when they originally licensed them. |

All indications suggest that this is not an upscale, but a true 1080p remaster from film. I'm so in, but very disappointed that, as a 3-time backer of AE's previous KS, I had to read about it on ANN first. I fully expected an e-mail giving me the heads up. |

I got notice that this was coming back in December. It was project update #40 for Riding Bean. |

Nice.
^I received the notice from Riding Bean end of last year as well. It has been kind of quiet since Mr. Woodhead's initial announcement though. He always does previews and allows backer feedback before his projects go live. Having the chipboard art box was a high priority for previous backers. I'm glad to see he was able to get permission to include it after all. |

I'm sure its a proper HD remaster. Would be crazy to have a Kickstarter for an upscale. Someone told you to get the old Otaku no Video DVD over the HD remaster? The HD remaster is gorgeous. |

Uhh.. None of these are upscales. Otaku No Video wasn't an upsale either. Anime, prior to digital animation brought in the very late 1990s and earlyish 2000s were all animated on a classic photographic process. While the original reels have been lost for some series (Sailor Moon. ) the 16mm (Sometimes 35mm but that's mostly on theatricla fetures) film is rescanned at MUCH higher resolution than their SD DVD releases. Otaku No Video shows all the detail from the 16mm film, even all the grain and the detail in every scratch between different cel layers. You get a LOT more from the BDs than the DVDs. The same is happening with Gunsmith Cats. |

I might have been vaguely interested in getting Bubblegum Crisis on Blu-ray, but not really interested enough to do the Kickstarter thing for it, and as far as I can tell it went out-of-print very soon after fulfillment happened. I wish AnimEigo would make at least their basic Blu-rays a bit more widely than just their own little website, since I might actually pick up one or two of them at some point.
(I'll never understand why anyone willingly paid money to re-release Riding Bean, but such are diverse tastes. ) |

However, I don't think AnimEigo would bother crowdfunding a release of a digital upscale from analog SD masters. So I agree that there shouldn't be cause for concern with Gunsmith Cats. |
