Well that's nice. & although it'll probably only be girls who switch legwear, I imagine guys who want to wouldn't have much problem switching a tie for a bow. Then again, the next time there's a summer heatwave, I imagine guys might welcome the chance to wear a skirt.

Since it's Japan, there'll probably be way less complaints about it than it would be in the "progressive" west, since the people who don't support it usually just ignore it.

Don't see anything wrong with having choice for uniforms, honestly surprised it has taken so long (well for one school at least). Don't really see how it supports 'LGBT' students than any other student though given everyone can choose not just those with a label. That's what I assume from the story anyway
In the secondary school I went to I saw like one girl in my 5 years that wore a skirt, every other girl wore trousers and blazer like the boys do. It was just normal. |

This is an interesting concept that I think may work. I also hope that it doesn't lead to any issues. Identity is a big thing around the world, and dressing as you feel most comfortable as is just as important.
It's only an issue to those that believe that there is no benefit. I don't hear anyone complaining about girls wearing pants, but if it is a boy wearing a skirt, people lose it. Stupid double standards. |

It does make me happy to see at least one school in Japan being open-minded. Students and parents have more options now and are not tied down by norms that have been expanding for years now. I wish them luck.

Progressive ideas is what would save Japan, right now. The point is that straight people don't want to have children, and one of the reason for that is because companies really hate maternal leave. In the moment they stop trying to kill a woman carrer in the instant she gets pregnant, things should change for the better. |

Good for them! Giving kids uniform options that let them feel comfortable is a great idea.

Honestly, policies like this benefits everyone, whether you are part of the LGBT community or not.
I have always felt uncomfortable with skirts. My grandfather offered to pay to send me to a Catholic private school at one point because I was having trouble with bullying in middle school and he thought maybe a different school would help. I turned him down for several reasons, but one of those was the mandatory skirts for girls with the uniforms. And I'm not even queer, I just don't like skirts. I don't know why anyone would have a problem with this policy. I think it's fantastic. |

This is great! When I was in grade school, some of my schools required you to wear a uniform. Girls could opt for pants or long shorts, but boys weren't allowed to wear skirts if they wanted to (not that they would even if they were allowed to, because kids were terrible). I hope more schools follow the lead of this one.

Man, I wish I had had the chance to wear trousers when I was in school, and not just sweatpants on sports days. Skirts were annoying then, and I had to lengthen mine to cover my legs.

I could see this having a widespread curb-cut effect in addition to giving LGBTQ+ kids more options. Skirts in winter are zero fun.

Fail to understand why is this news in a Anime news site.
Is any voice actor/singer/idol studying in this school? Or there are any anime taking place is this school? If ANN talked about the dress code of this school, why don't ANN talked about the public elementary school in Tokyo's Ginza district prefecture were the pricy new uniform is design by Armani. http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201802090052.html
School Girls in Japan love to use skirts even in winter and the even shorten them. Is a fashion trend since some time ago https://tokyogirlsupdate.com/school-uniform-short-skirt-20160693173.html . Last edited by Jonny Mendes on Sun Feb 11, 2018 3:55 pm; edited 1 time in total |

@Jonny Mendles: ANN has been posting all kinds Japan-related news since... almost forever? There are tons of news every month without any direct relation to anime.
