I dont know if it's just me but i'm finding the MAJORITY of the animes i have seen (and thats a lot) have really bad endings.

I just finished Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and the ending was the worse i have ever seen, it left so much to be explained and there is no other season coming out.

Well if the majority of anime you've seen have such ad endings why do you keep watching anime? I mean generally people try to avoid the things they don't like.

Um...because he still likes them even if they do end poorly? Just because it ends poorly doesn't mean the rest isn't enjoyable. Not to mention the ones that don't end poorly. I would agree with you had he said "the majority of anime are bad" but I think his point is that he finds that many otherwise good anime end poorly. Thats no reason to stop watching anime though.

Though I disagree that it is the majority, one possible explanation is that since most/many anime are based off Manga you encounter two problems:

1) Often the anime only covers the first part of the manga so the story is intended to still continue.

2) Sometimes the Manga will not be finished when the anime is made and so they must come up with their own conclusion to the story as it hasn't been written yet. They often can't match the quality of the original writer.

I guess you've just had bad luck? Sure, there are anime out there with bad endings, but most of them are at least decent.

There are great and bad endings, just like anything else.

How do you define a bad ending?

Like did the thing you wanted to happen not? Did 2 characters you wanted to hook up go seperate ways? Was the happy ending obscured by some dark twist of fate?

Or bad as in, the ending was abrupt or perhaps didn't tie up any of the plot strings of the series?

this is universal but it all comes down to ur own preferences and opinions of what a bad ending is. you mentioned tsubasa, well its not completely over yet the OVAs are still going.
negative outcomes tend to stick in ur mind and outweigh the positive or normal endings. though i have to admit my idea for bad endings are ones with alot of unanswered questions or it suddenly stopping in the middle as well.

if you dont mind heen, could you please list some more of your bad endings and explain why in a little bit more detail.

This is a case-by-case basis. However, tend to see more "so-so" to "bad" endings than "good" or "better" endings. It's all by the numbers, and it's usually more difficult to come up with a good ending - as opposed to a bad one.

A negative reaction to an ending. Based on that - forget what I just said. Some people may be more critical of these things -- and will more often view these endings as "bad".

As a litmus test, I put Mai-Hime's ending as one of the worst -- which gave me a "WTF are you doing?!" reaction.

Sometimes to be given all the answers at the end, at least for me is not the perfect ending.

The greatest things I'v seen (even non anime) have had similar endings. Things like FMA and 2001. Also you have to be more specific on what a bad ending is, like Inuyasha. Even the creators would agree of that having a bad endings. I find it that most times shows/movies anime does'nt matter, Leave the ending a bit to your imagination. And that is sometimes the best way(for me). A bad ending is (in my opinion) the ones that don't end. Just set up a continuation of the story. Kind of like the characters will keap doing what they have bean doing in the whole series forever.

I kind of contradicted myself there...Please give us more examples of what you consider bad endings.

I say a fair amount come out "bleh" or bad sometimes. Most often either the anime is just decent overall so it couldn't be a "great" ending, and a lot of things are left unexplained that should be(mechanics, obvious questions). Also, there are tons of anime with terrible endings because the manga is continuing but the anime is cut short. I'm extremely tired of having the story just come to a dead stop. I understand they try to capitalize on a manga while it's popular and still being written but ultimately can not end the anime properly. I really liked the ending to Nodame Cantibile even though the manga goes farther so I know it's possible to have a conclusive feeling, it doesn't always happen though.

It depends how you look at it. If you're not familiar to the series you may see it as mediocre, bad or good. If you're a true otaku of the series, the ending probably isn't going to matter to you. If you're a fan of the series, but more devoted to the manga version, you may not like the ending.

Ok, I think we can all agree that there is no way to answer the question unless the OP describes in much more detail what he means by "bad ending" and gives us some examples (properly spoiler tagged, of course) that he explains why they were bad.

I ask that no one else post in this thread until the OP comes back and explains what he means, or I'll have to come back and lock this thread like I probably should have done to begin with.

Anime is the only medium I've ever experienced that is literally plagued with non-endings. It's not that they're bad endings, it's that we can tell the story obviously isn't over, but I guess either someone ran out of time, or money, so we never get to see a real conclusion.

I have finished a lot series and not so many of them do have a good ending, unlike Rave of course the from good to worse, I hope I won't end up watching this kind of series that remained unfinished, well, it's horrible, right? I mean all anime are bad with an unfinished story right? Personal opinion of course.

Maybe the thread starter wants a really good ending though s/he catches up an anime with a bad ending. Try to look up on some recommendation that should put you to interest 'Good recommendation to good endings'. Bad ending can be such a headache on not liking an anime. Stick to it, I shoud say that writers and story-plot doers are not done for a bad ending to dislike an anime.

I've generally been satisfied with most of the anime I've seen personally. Every once in a while I see something I don't like though that:

a) Is needlessly or over depressing (Too much character death, tragedy, or destruction of the world or civilization sours the milk.)
b) Is a Reset button ending
c) Has Glaringly obvious plot holes never filled in or left for a sequel series or game to complete
d) Ends abruptly or confusingly without an explanation as to what went on or who survived
e) Romances developed between main characters that end in tragedy
f) Series that devolve into manga format, or stills with text flashing at the end, Gainax style.

...which would all be bad ending types in my book. Depending on what the rest of the show was like though, just because the ending was crap doesn't necessarily mean I hated the series however. It's a case by case basis depending on the number of flaws in the show.
