Man, Hacksaw Ridge is the last film I thought would be popular in China. Especially given its religious undertones.

At the rate it's going, I wonder if it'll end up overtaking Zootopia in china. For reference sake, Zootopia earned $235.6 million there.

makes me wonder if Spirited Away were released today what kind of business it would do.

although i assume it would be banned in China for depictions of ghosts and spirits.

China(and Your Name.) is a force to be reckoned with. Shocked
This movie would have been insanely successful even if it didn't make a penny in Japan just with these numbers.

Anyone know what the exact numbers for Spirited Away are, adjusted for inflation and converted accurately? According to Box Office Mojo + Wikipedia, it is around $290,000,000 which is very close to what Your Name. has made, but I'm sure that is taken from whatever the yen to dollar conversion was back then and might not be entirely accurate.

Japan has actually experienced periods of deflation since the release of Spirited Away. The yen is only worth about $0.10 more than it was in 2001.

Your Name will never get close to touching Spirited Away's domestic total (30bn yen). but it will easily beat its international total since the anime market has expanded dramatically in the last 15 years.

Yeah, I don't expect it to hit that, but I think it could, and probably will, best it in total box office revenue world-wide. That's pretty exciting. I don't think many people expected something like this from Your Name. I sure didn't. His movies have always been a bit of a quiet affair in the past.

I think it was only a matter of time for a director like Shinkai. his films have wide appeal and the "eye candy" factor is a reliable hook to sell tickets to first-timers.

How about Makoto Shinkai? Yes, the anime has been printing money, but how about him? How much money will be given to him? Yes, 'will be given'. That man deserves at least 10 millions dollar money. As far as I know that he is a director with salary. Correct me if I am wrong. But, this is not about directing, this is about making a unique work. I hope, he earns a lot of money.

Considering that creative rights sit with the original creator first and foremost in Japan, I imagine he got some decent royalties from this. I'd love to see numbers on it though.

I think Mr. Shinkai's got a lot to be proud of here. He's got a big hit on his hands. Also,the fact that he's going to be rich when it's all over with,also must be on his mind. Both things must be making him smile a lot recently.
