Someone on tumblr is actually doing a Masterpost of this same topic, there are way more of them than the article mentions: http://seiyuna.tumblr.com/post/152078896927/yoimasterpost
BTW, do you have a source on when Suwabe denied that Plushenko was the inspiration for Victor? All the skating people I've seen commenting on the show seem to agree that that's the most obvious inspiration as far as the show's characters (there doesn't seem to be that much agreement on the inspirations for the two Yuris) Last edited by CrowLia on Fri Oct 28, 2016 4:04 pm; edited 2 times in total |

I'm crying. I did wonder how the skating world was receiving this show. It's good to see they embrace it warmly.

'Rumored' It's actually entirely fan speculation with absolutely no basis in anything official at all. As a 'skating person', I think Viktor is not at all like Plushenko. Maybe Sayo Yamamoto created her own characters and Viktor is based off Viktor. Same with Yuri. |

I'm one of the two non-Japanese fans to have attended the preview screening two weeks before it aired, and the director Kubo Mitsurou-sensei has indeed admitted that Yuri and Victor are inspired in part by Hanyuu Yuzuru and Plushenko, so. Not rumored, not debunked, but true. However, Victor was not modeled on Victor (only inspired in part by); he was modeled on "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" headliner John Cameron Mitchell (this was mentioned both at the show and in an interview with the director in anime magazine PASH). |

Official or not, I would love to stick with this basis because those people are actually learning something, and it's awesome how those real life skaters are gaining popularity from the otaku culture. If Victor was based from Plushenko and Yuri from Yuzuri Hanyu, the fandom would be digging for more informations about the upcoming future characters and would probly base it again with real life figure skaters. As a non-skater myself I didn't even know who was Plushenko, Evgenia(just followed her on twitter) or Hanyu nor do I have the knowledge of figure skating stuff, now it made interested a little, I wish seiyuu Junichi S. didn't debunked this that early lol some still had hopes of learning stuffs. Viktor actually made me interested with Plushenko. |

This actually makes me wonder whom the Czech skater Emil Nekola may be based upon. There is real Czech skater Karel Nekola, but he wasn't very successful. His namesake, Ice Hockey player and coach is actually more known inside and outside of the country. My guess is Czechoslovakian skater Ondrej Nepela, who won his only Olympic medal in 1972 in Sapporo, so he may be well known in Japan. He also was star in (then West) German ice show Holiday on Ice, whose name, I am quite sure, was inspiration for the anime title. The problem here, however, is that Nepela was actually a Slovakian, not Czech, so if he really was an inspiration for Nekola (and the name similarties makes me wonder), that may actually be a problem for the anime creators for not catching this, well known, honestly, detail.

Can we just appreciate the fact that an ice skating World Champion is an anime fan and fujoshi? This is killing me!

He posted this tweet: 『ユーリ!!! on ICE』で自分が演じるヴィクトルのモデルをプルシェンコ氏と言っている方がおられますが、ところがどっこい違いますよ。 "There are people who are saying that Viktor, who I play in Yuri!!! on ICE, is modeled on Plushenko, but hang on, that's wrong." I will change the wording to "denied," though. |

It's pretty obvious if you're a figure skating fan. You can tell who the Yuris are based on by their strengths and weaknesses in skating: Yuri Plisetsky = Yulia Lipnitskaya Yuuri Katsuki = Yuzuru Hanyu & Tatsuki Machida As for where their looks came from, we don't yet know. Yuuri could be based on Parasyte's Izumi, because MAPPA. The gap between glasses!Yuuri and skating!Yuuri are as much of a jump as the two stages of Izumi in Parasyte. Well, wherever the inspiration for character designs came from, they came out great. |

This series can now be used as an educational material for future skaters then
not that many anime series received endorsements from well know individuals |

Here's one to add. Not an endorsement per se, but a recognition of the series.

If I was Hanyu, having a figure skater based on me is flattering, but I would more honored by the fact my hometown, Sendai, was founded 416 years by the famous Date Masamune.
