I am literally on the train back from seeing the movie. Had to catch it fast too so I didn't stay to see this announcement. Was out of my sear as soon as the credits started. That being said though, don't really care. I laughed a lot during the screening, but in a bad way. I don't really like kabuki to begin with, but I really feel like the average One Piece fan outside of Japan would probably find it pretty bad too. The acting just doesn't work with the characters and story to me, and they straight up change some characters peraonalities and story events so that they are more kabuki archetype-y. But not in a way that feels fresh or creative though, just lazy and like a money-grab. Thank god it was condensed to just two hours though. I don't think I could have sat through however long the actual stage production is.

I saw the Fukuoka run earlier this year. I don't know any Japanese but I thought it was pretty entertaining, just from a visual standpoint. Seeing how the characters, costumes, and sets translated into a theatrical production was pretty cool. Some of it was a bit cheesy like the swinging through the crowds but the huge waterfall on stage was pretty unexpected.
I'm curious if they'll do the same arc or if they'll do the New World. I think it'd be pretty cool to see the sets of Fishman Island. |
