Except that Yen press has, prior to this, released a lot of NON Kadokowa titles - for example Brides story and Emma [ ENTERBRAIN Inc], Yotsuba& [ASCII media works inc] and Bunny drops [Shodensha publishing Co. Ltd] - i'm sure others can quote other titles and companies]

While it may not mean independance in the literral sense, it does mean we'll potentially see a lot less new titles from those companies in the future coming from YP.

Ah, I see your point.
That said, Enterbrain and ASCII Media Works are both Kadokawa brands.

So, this means YP will publish Kadokawa titles, and nothing but Kadokawa titles.

I'm cautiously optimistic (that's as optimistic as I get) Kadokawa publishes every series I am currently collecting in some capacity. with the exceptions of My Monster Secret (Akita Shoten) and Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Tokuma Shoten). It's good to see Viz and Kodansha are not the only ones getting closer ties or subsidiary deals with Japanese publishers.

Well that's an interesting turn of events. I just hope this doesn't negatively impact their localization of Oregairu...

I am currently buying Yen Press titles.

It would be interesting how this buy out would effect Yen Press current and future releases.

-Goodbye non-Kadokawa/Shueisha titles ever getting licensed

I don't know. The majority of their light novels and related manga are from Kadokawa, but most of their other series are Square Enix, including some of their biggest titles. That would be a lot to pass up.

-Shit-ton of Kadokawa manga and LN licenses incoming

Hopefully everything that got DMCAed on BT will be licensed at the least -- Sakurasou, Haganai, Legend of the Legendary Heroes, Papakiki, Itsuten(!). Even better would be if we finally see Toradora, Hakomari, and Golden Time.

-I mean we always have Seven Seas...

If YP is going exclusive with Kadokawa, that means Squeenix is going to be like the popular girl who got dumped the day before prom, and Seven Seas is the only boy in school without a date. On the other hand, if Yen can still pull in Squeenix series, that means Seven Seas now has one less publisher they can license from.

Short term, nothing changes. Long term, I can see Yen Press being more like Viz and just becoming crummy with no color pages or the like ('cause Viz is awesomeness on extras). Eventually, I see Yen Press being no more and just being Viz.

I take it this means that Kadokawa's stuff won't be available to license to Vertical, Seven Seas, etc? In much the same way that Shueisha's stuff is Viz or nothing.

This is one of those double edged sword announcements. On the one hand, it's exciting to know that Kadokawa, who seems to have fingers in a ton of pies, will be providing more content for Yen Press to license through this deal.

On the other hand, I'm just slightly worried about how Yen Press' relationship with Square will go now that this has occurred. I'm hoping it doesn't end things messily, as Square has some extremely enjoyable manga in their stable and the fact that Yen Press has licensed so much of it has been quite awesome.

Does this mean more titles? Hmm, let's see how this merger will work out.

No, not my favorite US manga/novel distributor! You're going to ruin it like you did with Del Ray aren't you, and leave me with a bunch of incomplete titles I'll never be able to finish buying. Evil or Very Mad
