To make over a 130 million dollars worth of profit from one movie is really astounding, especially coming from an anime franchise as very few animated movies ever make that much.
This franchise is not simply going to end with this movie considering the huge amount of profit it is generating and as well as the tourism it is bringing to the town it set on it. It is a very good series

Is 13 Million dollars not 130, and it isn't profit, but sales(Profit is the value after removing the costs). While this is an amazing result I believe you're downgrading anime movies sales. Counting last year results, this movie has still more than 10 other animated movies doing better. |

ok my bad..i miscalculated with the yen to dollar conversion ( wont be the first time i did) but when i meant by impressive i was talking about a late night show to movie as the guy above mentioned...Madoka , Live Live and K-on are the only ones to have had a movie made that have had had higher sale results in the theater for there respective movies..it aint easy to achieve those numbers. |

The delayed 4DX release strategy was quite brilliant: I saw the movie when it opened in November, and now here I am going to see it again in 4DX on Sunday. Then again, the standard release was the most fun I'd had watching anime in a theater since REDLINE, so I'm pretty stoked about this (and more than happy to give them my money).
Seriously, this movie has a scene spoiler[in which one tank uses another tank as a ramp to launch itself into the air and, at the apogee of its arc, fire from mid-air down the barrel of a freakin' Mörser Karl, igniting its ammunition and blowing it to kingdom come]. I can't wait to see this movie I may even buy the import copy of the movie since I want to own it so bad and can understand it raw. But give it time their will be a fan subbed version right after the official disc release. If my trip to Japan wasn't delayed to this October I'd see it in 4DX right now.
As for it being licensed and showing in a local theater ain't going to happen anytime soon and for the theater not a chance in hell. Sentai owns the TV rights and may be working on getting the Movie rights but since the movie came out last November expect to wait at least 1 year from then or longer at the earliest for a official US release. And as far as I can remember Sentai has never ever got one of their titles on the big screen for limited showings in theaters. Of course Funimation has done it a bunch of times and Aniplex every now and then. |

I'm just going to assume you mean "nationwide", since I'll point out that BOTH studios (FUNimation & Sentai) regularly have their stuff showing at alamo drafthouse theaters in Texas. But on the main point, Sentai has "Short Peace" which got a theatrical run, but other than that (in Sentai's defense) they don't have a LARGE amount of theatrical movies in their library (they have a ton of TV series). And FUNi has had "easy" sells like the DBZ movies and the new Eva movies. EDIT: on a related note tho, Sentai also has the rights to the K-On movie, which did not get a theatrical release, so I wouldn't expect GaruPan to get one (aside from maybe REALLY local to Texas) either. |

And please dont say "watch it", my head does not accept the mixture of highschool girls driving a T90 or a Sherman... |

That looks like a rhetorical question but . . .
That mixture is one of the things that make it popular. High school girls are popular and mecha, of many various types, are popular. For me one of the attractions is the juxtaposition of realism and absurdity. The tanks are amazingly detailed and, as far as I can tell, completely authentic. The way that the girls use the tanks is more surreal than real. To really enjoy the show I think that you need to be able to accept that it is not set in our world and that things are a bit different in the world of the show. Also, Girls und Panzer is a slice of life series of the cute-girls-doing-cute-things type. Sort of like K-On!, but with war machines instead of musical instruments. It will probably be a long time before I can see this movie, but I have watched the TV series four times and the OVAs twice, so far. |

Because the tank skirmishes are rather fun to watch with a decent amount of strategy used and the girls are rather cute. Those with knowledge of WWII tanks can enjoy how accurate a lot of stuff in the series is. The way the battles are shot is quite unique, where sometimes you get a view as if there was a camera just mounted on top of the tank. The locales for the battles are varied between the mountains, city, forest, and snow. Just overall a very enjoyable and entertaining watch for those who could enjoy a competitive sport anime dealing with WWII tank skirmishes.

I saw this while I was in Japan and there's so much going on that you literally have to see this two or three times to grasp everything! Too bad Americans won't be able to experience this in 4DX because it is well worth it. They need to like bring this over to the 4DX theater in LA Live and have it part of Anime Expo 2016.
As for why GuP is so popular, it's like Strike Witches in a way where in a "what if" world where all the schools are on top of aircraft carriers and one of the extracurricular activities is a friendly match with other schools using tanks from the WWII era. You have high schools representing Britain (St. Gloriana), the US (Saunders), Italy (Anzio, from the OVA), Soviet Russia (Pravda), and Germany (Kuromorimine) and a school with a mixed tanks (Ooarai, the protagonist school). Instead of dark gloomy WWII fighting, it's a friendly match, similar to Strike Witches if what if everyone just got along in a friendly rivalry. In the movie, you also add Finland (Jatkosota), Japan (Chihatan), and an university level team. And there's also the spice where you sorta have to cheer for the underdog school who is out tanked whose team is commanded by a very unlikely commander using very unconventional tactics. And the background of the anime is actually quite nice that it takes place in Ooarai, which is a real port city in Japan that was one of the hardest hit by the tsunami in 2011. One of the producers was born in that area and wanted to help. He asked the Ooarai Chamber of Commerce if there was anyway to help and they town said they needed cheering up and a way to bring back tourists to help the local economy so he made an anime where the high school girls are from Ooarai. A lot of the profits and proceeds go to Ooarai recover and a lot of tourists have came back to Ooarai. If you ever visit Japan, it's also become one of the must do sidetrips to go and visit Ooarai (not really that far from Tokyo. If you stay in Narita, it's about a 1.5-2 hour train ride) perhaps even staying one night at one of the hotels that are shown in the anime (Ooarai Seaside Hotel, Ooarai Hotel, Sakanaya-honten) who have anglerfish nabe and even tank cakes straight from the anime if you stay there (approx $150/night dinner and breakfast included). |
