So, unless there's already a tour for it, how long do you think it'll take for some company to string a bunch of these "anime holy lands" into one vacation package?

This sounds kind of cool. I'm going on a trip to Japan next March, and while I wouldn't go out of my way just to see the background from an anime, it'd be cool to be walking along and have an app tell me what anime have used that scenery.

I've visited a couple of "Holy Lands" myself. Please feel free to take a look at the video footage I took.
Toyosato Primary School (K-On!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSyoik4l1MY Washinomiya Shrine and Kyouei High School (Lucky Star) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kolw6MFD4kY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phchic0iIcg ...and while not from anime, Narumi Detective Agency (Kamen Rider W) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZg98gH3MKw Not to mention, any location in Japan can be technically considered a "Holy Land" as it's not uncommon for them to be featured in anime. Sites like Akihabara, Comiket (Tokyo Big Sight) and the Kyoto/Nara landmarks. Honestly, I can't see any downside to having real-life locations featured in anime. Not only does it boost tourism, it is easier for animators to get reference material and the fans who visit can literally take a step into their favorite anime. Have a graduation trip to Japan planned next year. Wonder where I should visit next. (^.^;) |

One place I'd love to visit is the rural home featured in Wolf Children Ami and Yuki.
Other than that... I dunno. "Around". I would love to spend a week or two exploring Japan, but I don't have any real dream destination yet. Unless someone can point me to the bathhouse from Spirited Away. |

I've also been to Toyosato (this summer), as well as locations in Kyoto featured in K-on! (last summer).
And I spent a LOT of money* on anime merchandise on both occasions. So yeah, 'Go foreign otakus!'.. I guess. 
*A butt load of dough. |

Yes, I've seen NHK too. And no, the building is not being used as a school anymore. They've shifted over to the new campus and the old campus is now exclusively preserved as a cultural icon/K-On! Museum of sorts. Anyone can visit and is free to donate K-On! memorabilia. |

A lot of the time I find a scene in an anime after I've already visited the location, e.g. the road to the Hikawa Shrine in Omiya-ku, Saitama seen in Coppelion:

 ). The fact that you can actually go in, walk around and take pictures was a pleasant surprise. As was the fact that not all of the building was dedicated to K-On!, but only the reconstructed clubroom and the gift shop (the school building was made into a museum before K-On! came out).
Other places I've visited mainly because of anime include the city of Uji (home of KyoAni and the main setting of Sound! Euphonium, including the riverbank, the bridge and the mountain Kumiko and Reina climb), the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto (featured prominently in Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha), the Osamu Tezuka museum in Takarazuka, the Tetsujin 28-go/Gigantor statue in Kobe, Akihabara, the summer Comiket and the Gundam replica in Odaiba. I was also planning on seeing the school from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya during my trip through Hyogo prefecture, but the train ride to Himeji took much longer than I had anticipated, so I had to adjust my plans. Oh, and I also took the bus to Abenobashi station in Osaka almost every day, but of course these days that area looks nothing like it's portrayed in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (nearby Shinsekai and Tobita Shinchi look the part better, although the latter is famous/notorious for a very different reason). Next time I go to Japan, I would definitely like to explore the anime-related spots in the Tokyo area better (the Ghibli museum, Washinomiya, Chichibu, etc.). Just for the heck of it I'd also kinda like to visit the villages where Higurashi and Barakamon were set. |

I don't know about foreigners, but the farm from Field of Dreams is a tourist hotspot in the middle of nowhere, Iowa. "People will come, Ray" indeed. |
