No, the trailer displays "ゲンガー," which definitely reads "Gengar."
"Gangar" would be "ガンガー." |

The name comes from "doppelganger", which in Japanese is spelt as "ドッペルゲンガー". |

Yeah, I know the origin of the name. If it really was the second half of "döppelganger," it'd have been spelled "Ganger" (and would have still been really unintuitive for someone with the slightest bit of knowledge of how to pronounce things in English).

What's being pointed out here is that, in the video, while the katakana is ゲンガー, it is spelled "Gangar" in English underneath it. The Official English version's spelling is "Gengar", but all Japanese Pokemon have their own romanized spellings in Japan that are consistent with their official Japanese products. The official Japanese romanization of "Gengaa" is "Gangar"--hence why it is spelled "Gangar" in the video trailer. The trailer was shown to a Japanese audience. Some Pokemon share the same name in Japanese and English, but are romanized completely differently. For instance, "Plusle" is プラスル ("purasuru") in Japanese, but the official Japanese romanization is "Prasle". "Togepi" is トゲピー ("togepii") and the official Japanese romanization is "Togepy". Nothing to freak out about, really. Certainly, "Gangar" may or may not be more accurate a spelling to its origins than "Gengar", but similarly, I wouldn't spell "plus" with an "r" and an "a" for "Plusle", either. |

In Japan, yes. Ever since the first generation, it's always been spelled "Gangar" here. Just a difference from the English/International version, so it's no big deal. There's no official reference to the "doppelgangar" explanation, but the nature of the Pokemon ever since the first generation's games have alluded to the "double" aspect of Gengar, something his pre-evos don't have. He's often considered a ghost that takes the shape of peoples' shadows, hence why he's more human-like than his pre-evos. Examples of previous trademarked merchandise: 
On a side note, the only reason the Japanese Pokemon Tretta pods say "Gengar" on them instead of "Gangar" are because instead of localizing the game for other Asian countries and regions, like Hong Kong, they just programmed the language into the system and put the international info on the pods in English, so all of the Pokemon's names appear with their English trademarked name underneath the Japanese katakana. |

Ah, all right then. I thought other products had always said "Gengar." I didn't know they also said "Gangar" on them.
