I actually picked this up a couple of weeks ago, but I have yet to watch it. But now I am pretty excited, and this is a great reminder to pop it in the DVD player.

Reviews like this remind me that this colimn isn't always just about the old or underground anime. I remember seeing an ad for this film and wanting to pick it up. Now I will.

I'll buy it in your place then. Seems like a very interesting work -- I've read the glowing ANN review before this Buried Treasure spotlight but never got around to buying it. The fact that it's unlike most Korean animation (note to self: cliched crap) is a boon. |

I saw My Beautiful Girl Mari when it was released on DVD in the US and I loved it, I actually brought it with me on vacation, but I'm staying with someone else for two nights and the DVD player is R2 only, so I can't watch it right now. The director has a new animated film called "Yobi, the Five Tailed Fox", it's fansubbed and is available on DVD with English subs, though they may not be great quality in accuracy terms/spelling. I did hear about a Korean animated series called "White Heart Baek-Gu" that is supposed to be very good, I may try and order it from yesasia, do they bootleg? Because if they do I won't order from them.

Ah, I love My Beautiful Girl Mari. My fiance has owned the R3 for quite a while, so that's how I first saw it. While not quite a connoisseur of world animation (yet), I do actively seek out animation to watch from all over the place, and Mari is by far my favorite Korean animation. Well, tied with Doggie Poo as my favorite Korean animation, anyway. I remember showing it to a group of animators while I was an undergrad and everyone was blown away by the beauty of the art, even if some became bored by the story.
If Mari got a spotlight, is there any chance (however slim) we'll get to see a write-up on McDull or some high-quality Mainland Chinese animation like Havoc in Heaven in the future?

I'd love to, and I think I do have a copy, but no subs. And as I don't speak a word of Mandarin (or Cantonese for that matter) I have absolutely no hope of understanding it to the point where I'd feel comfortable writing about it. If you know where I can get a translation I'd love to give it a go. |

Maybe the show is too artistic for me, but i just can't like the animation... the story is only so so and is almost like the Korean flicks with a little magic... and its above all slow and thru out most of the film i'm a little bored by it...
Maybe its the style of animation, but overall the animation quality don't fit the story... sorry... the story isn't the best also... Also the dubbing is not that good also... that also almost bored... Watched it once and donated to my club, for others to "enjoy"... |

I read that the Korean movie Oseam was screened in Korean cinemas the same date with Princess Mononoke and since everyone went to see the latter it didn't fare well in the Korean box office.
I've seen the series Baekgu. It was directed by Oseam director. While not the best series, the characters were very good and it was better than many Japanese series. Yobi had very good animation but it didn't impress me as much as Mari Yiagi. Probably had to do with the fact that It is intended for younger audiences. Also check the korean movie If you were me - anima vision. It is a compilation of short films concerning human rights in Korea, one of which is the impressive short film by Mari Yiagi director called "Bicycle Trip". Some other short movies of that compilation were also memorable. Some of the best Korean independent animators participated. There are also two live-action movies of "If you were me" and some short films are very well directed. As you can imagine none of these movies did well in the box office. As for Asian animation, except McDull from Hong Kong I-City has some nice independent animated films but it is intended for animation and not anime viewers. From Taiwan Grandma and her ghosts deserves also a mention, since it won an award in Chicago and Taipei and has very good directions by two of Taiwan's best directors. Has many similarities to Ghibili movies. |

Plus Princess Mononoke is just a much better movie than Oseam. Oseam had its heart in the right place, but was pretty sloppy and amateur-feeling, particularly in its editing. The kid was really annoying too... Come to think of it, I don't think Korea has ever had a domestic animation do well at the box office. And given how Koreans usually turn out to support their domestic industries, that probably says quite a bit, right there. I do enjoy McDull quite a bit. Thanks for the suggestion of Grandma and her Ghosts -- I'll have to check that one out. |

Ermm, Aachi & Ssipak.(Korea, 2006) surely is an example of original & successful Korean art-house(?) animation.
Personally I was both offended & belly-amused, impressed by the amazing concepts (think coprophiliac allegory) & the astounding pacing. colours, music & voice-acting - had to admire it while feeling disgusted, heh heh. I think it went further than aping Janime - kinda like a Korean Bill Burroughs this guy. OK - go search ANN for some good forum threads on it - or watch it. And thanks again for an interesting Buried Treasure. How about doing one on "Ushiro no Shoumen Dare" soon? NM
