The technical achievement is impressive, but this demo really creeps me out.

Obviously CG, but man is the animation impressive. And for some reason, I get zero creepy uncanny valley vibes from this. Well done. Now will I actually be able to buy this?

@enurtsol
That's expected. The comments however belie those offended sensibilities. http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/01/summer-lesson-sony-project-morpheus/
lol, Toonami and practically all other US media online or tv http://www.businessinsider.com/sonys-virtual-reality-system-project-morpehus-demonstrates-summer-lesson-2014-9
And you know that would be true too
Will they forge ahead and exploit the differences between the press and their actual audience like Dragon's Crown did? Or will they cave? I'm not that optimistic personally. edit: I just remembered this same situation occurred with Kia for it's Brazillian car ad for dual-zone climate controls (i.e. cold & hot) and they also caved in: Kia Apologizes, Distances Itself From Sexy Brazilian Cartoon Ads

Somehow I knew this was the reaction this would be received with. Not being racist, but the western audience (especially Americans) seem to always pass off Japanese products as weird and creepy. Now, I realize that a lot of weird things have come out of japan yes, but this should not be labeled as creepy. I know, I know, it's virtual reality in the bedroom of a girl, Tekken should have been more smart with their demo, but people should focus on the product itself. The CG looks quite nice in this, and the mouth movements actually keep up with the audio. I didn't feel that anything in it was creepy except for the yes or no icons that pop up. Like I said, probably not the best idea to use the bedroom of a girl as a demo, but some of these reactions are a little bit over. Just because there is a girl in it people immediately think, "porn and erotica". Seriously? |

Ya guys missed the point why I quoted that part of the Japanese speech. Here, I'll quote it again:
To be clear: otaku =! wide, spread, large When that's what they're aiming for, this is not the way to do it! Which person in the boardroom decided this would be a wise business decision?
Ah, someone got it. When you're showing off for the whole world, this is not what you show. They deserve the reactions they get for being stupid. What do they expect? There's a time and place; this isn't it. |

The problem is they are targeting a very odd audience in what appears to be an otherwise a professional thing. Whether you call it creepy or not it is quite obvious they are targeting an older male audience, and 'otaku' at that. It isn't porn or erotica no, neither is it voyeuristic or anything like that, however it is mildly disturbing for many audiences including the Japanese. A lot of Japanese are not into this sort of stuff anymore than your "westerners". Putting the user in a private virtual bedroom with a high school girl wanting tutoring has all sorts of connotations. You can be absolutely certain that they knew this while making it, yet they chose to do it this way anyway. The fact they programmed in such thing as "nervousness" when you get close speaks to this. The way they have got her acting very cutesy, as well as how they position her standing in front over you when asking questions in the video. The design points quite strongly towards this being made without the most noble of intentions. Although they thankfully and quite necessarily kept it 'clean'. Which I find sad because it makes very clear the market they are aiming for with the device. At the same time I do admit they also know their audience. The one they are aiming at with this, is the audience most likely to give them a lot of their early revenue.
The producer of Tekken obviously! To be honest not the first person I would bring on board for this sort of project. |

What I'm saying is that the mainstream western press is not reflective of the audience. Their audience--gamers on the PS4 (again, not the media or press)--for a VR headset is much wider and not as easily offended as you make them out to be. |

Gamers on the PS4 (of the ~15 million PS4 sold, less than a million sold in Japan) are mostly in the West, where gaming is mainstream. That's their audience for this. If they gonna show it off to the world as the first impression, they know they gonna have to deal with that type of public relations. |

Yes yes... aside from the obvious adult implications our perverse minds obviously jump to, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
Exploring something like this is an awesome first step for NPC interaction. Imagine chilling with your buddies at the bar or at school in games like Catherine or persona. Stuff that is normally relegated to cutscenes/dialogue portions with minimal interaction now becomes more immersive that allows greater interactivity. Allowing us just to naturally nod our heads or look in a certain direction to trigger dialogue or events could make for some very cool interaction and re playability of scenes. it makes sense that they'd start with a simple scenario of teaching a student math. Who knows? Maybe there'll also be a male character option if that's what's bothering people. Not that women wouldn't also appreciate the kawaii effect of having a girl as a student. If they only had the budget to do one character, it's more sense to choose a girl. In the end I'm betting it won't be anything like the H-game many people are reading into it, though I wouldn't put it past the devs to cleverly account for what a player might attempt to do, and counter it, which would be pretty awesome. Not at all. While PS4 sales are at their strongest in the West, Sony is still trying to sell well in the Japanese market and Summer Lesson is obviously aimed primarily at the Japanese market and has only so far been shown off in Japan. In the West, Morpheus is demoed with it's own unique trade show titles and retrofitted to existing games that Western audiences prefer. you certainly won't see Summer Lesson highlighting their lineup, though it will probably how up along with other Japanese titles that will cater to the niche Western audience which does exist and like those titles. If you want to see actual adult-themed VR in the West then there are already Western firms working on pornographic content for Oculus Rift. If any western Media wants to start a controversy, then they'll have plenty more Western material to work off of than Summer Lesson. |

It was first shown on TGS 2014, a big international event (Japan's equivalent of CES). That's why they had to pull it from there - they realized they made a boo-boo. And let me quote them again:
Just to be clear: otaku =! wide, spread, large They're not aiming for a niche market to show this off.
I know about that on Oculus Rift - heck I brought it up here! And I wouldn't recommend Oculus Rift to use those neither if they're trying to show it off for the rest of the world as the first impression. As I said, there's a time and place - gotta know what to use when; don't use something that could easily be misconstrued that the international audience would find questionable. (Just because you have a shag-mobile as a legit transportation purpose, don't show up with it at the parents house to pick up your date if ya do want them to let her go with ya. We've actually seen that. ) |

Hm, this is very interesting. I guess the main problem in this whole situation is that the Tekken producer is not ambitious enough. He is only making this to appeal to male adult otakus, while if done correctly this could draw in a lot of supporters around the world, not just otakus. Or it could be that this producer is really creepy and is doing this so he himself can enjoy firsthand the experience I can see the indecent intents behind this, and yes I can see the possible things this might lead to, which really makes me sad. This could have been great. |
