I usually buy one DVD at a time however given that the cash is there I'll pick up two. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen often since I use the money on games or manga.
With my pursuit for the full collection of Fullmetal Alchemist, I'll probably be buying more DVDs at one time in order to speed up the process. Only Vol. 2 -13 to go!

I usually invest in complete collections to save money. That's about 6 DVD's at a time.

I really only care about Weekly Jump stuff (since Lupin and Detective Conan aren't really in stores anymore) so it depends on how much money I have and what Jump stuff they have that I need.

Um, well I guess I average about 6 at a time, but it can be much more or only a couple. Rarely only one. And not always complete series either. But always enough to get free shipping if that is an option(which is a great marketing technique by the way).
Next question: How often do you make purchases online? Or. What online retailers do you use the most? That last one would be tough because I use a lot, but it probably would be TRSI.

I live overseas, so I have keep the total sum (this includes shipping) of my order under 38 euros (~ US$ 50), so I don't have to pay taxes and customs. This means that I can usually order only 2 dvds at a time, unless it's a really cheap boxset.
In my country, these taxes and customs are not collected if the sum one has to pay is 10 euros or less. Here, the VAT for dvds is 22% and the customs is ~4%, so my limit is 10/(0.22+0.04)= 38.5 euros.
Edit. I use mostly dvdpacific, because the prices and international shipping costs are very reasonable.

Well, for me, it varies. It has to be enough to qualify for the free shipping, if offered. However, lately, I've only been buying things from Rightstuf's sales/weekly specials (in a sad attempt to curb my buying until I catch up on my backlog... ... I'm failing..) so really it's whatever I want out of the sale.

I buy DVDs once a year at Anime Evolution. Usually 3 or 4 box sets so approx. 18 - 24 DVDs.

Currently, about four or five at a time since there are so many awesome licenses this years like Eureka Seven, Haruhi, Shana, Ergo Proxy...etc.
I used to always make my purchases at amazon, but the sudden raise of their charging for international shipping drove me to consider other retailers like TRS which I found quite satisfactory except for how the new items take longer to ship from them than amazon, so I'm currently divided between the two depending on what I want to watch ASAP.

My decision was based on how it took my copy of the fifth volume of Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden about a month to ship after its release day which really irritated me at that time considering how badly I wanted to get my hand on that copy. From your post I see that it doesn't always happen.

According to the poll, it said how many do you buy online, so I put 10+, because that's usually what happens when I feel like buying something off TRSI. Now when I buy in a store or Gamestop, it's usually only 1 or 2 DVDs unless somebody's got something going on, which then it might be 5 or 6.

I was sure it'd be 4 or 5 but for whatever reason I wanted to be somewhat accurate so I calculated it. Cripes! I took a count of all the DVD's I bought within the past year from TRSI only, it came out to 302, I took that and divided it by the Number of orders I had with at least 1 DVD on them, 30 . I definitely need to settle down a bit with the buying. However the poll asks for number of discs so I counted the number of discs in box sets and bundle orders separately. But still..

It's kind of a strange poll, I think. You could say that people with more financial security would order more at one time, but at the same time if you're living from paycheck to paycheck, only get paid once a month, and then spend your monthly anime budget all at the same time and order a bunch, that throws off the pattern. (See also: Christmas & birthday money)
Regardless, I try to buy my anime locally if possible, and try to support my community. Sometimes I still do order online, and I usually get 2-3 discs at once -- mainly because the sites I typically buy from offer free shipping if you spend over $25. (Other sites offer free shipping, I know, but they don't always have the desired selections) If there are special limited editions coming out, I do try to preorder those online to ensure I get one. Case in point is the Haruhi LE coming out next week. It's confirmed as having been shipped and I should get it (with volumes 1 & 2 of To Heart) on Wednesday. Some things you don't want to leave to chance ^_-
