Those numbers are pretty bad. Granted we still have sunday, but it doesn't look well for the adaptation of all you need is kill.

178 million to make, earn 140.1 so far. It's not good. It wouldn't say it's horrible. I'm pretty sure they won't lose money.
And it hasn't open in Japan yet, not until July 4. it has the fourth-biggest opening in China this year. Only hollywood can make this type of numbers for a light novel adaptation. |

It's not dead. The overseas numbers are way better. And for a movie adapted from a Viz story, that's not bad at all. It could've gone the way of Dragonball Evolution if the wrong people were attached to it.

I really want to see it, but I just haven't been able to get out to the show.

It's a shame it's not doing better. I thought it was a pretty good adaptation, even though it spends much of its first minutes justifying why a guy Tom Cruise's age is fighting as a foot soldier in the front lines, which wouldn't be necessary if they had had casted a guy in his '20s or '30s in the main role. In my opinion, it's a much smarter, more engaging blockbuster than Godzilla.

I kinda expected it wouldn't do so well, since there only like 10 other people in the movie with me in a theater that seats a hundred or so on opening day. That's to be expected though when it's competing against a Disney powerhouse and X-Men. I also went to an early matinee showing in the afternoon too though, and more people go at night.
Overall this movie was highly entertaining and well made though. It deserves better. Last edited by Kruszer on Sun Jun 08, 2014 2:46 pm; edited 1 time in total |

$29.1 million is a bit low for a first weekend. Even if it does hold out well, which might be the case given the stellar critical response so far, it would be a stretch for it to earn much more than $100 million. At least the foreign grosses seem promising at the moment.

Pokenatic: It earned $100 million overseas. It's doing fine.

yikes. That's not good. I was kinda expecting it to do better, given the positive critical response and all the advertising. Hopefully it will do REALLY well overseas so it has a chance of breaking even.

The problem is obvious, no axe.

Very disappointing. I was skeptical about a Tom Cruise vehicle, but I haven't read a negative review yet. The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and the AV Club (and ANN's own Zac Bertschy, via Twitter) all gave the movie top marks. I hope it has some staying power and some word-of-mouth publicity going for it. I want to see it now, and I rarely see films right after they come out, so I hope it can stay in theaters for a while.

Why so pessimistic?
If you believe, which I don't, the old double the budget scenario, given the foreign haul so far its not out of the realm of possibility for it to come close to 400. You probably only need about 100 from the US, and 300 ww, something I can see as doable. |

I suspect it'll do alright. It'll make back it's money, maybe even turn a decent profit once it's released in Japan. Reviews are relatively positive, so I'm guessing DVD sales probably will do pretty well. It's not a smash hit, but this ain't bad.

I don't know about the whole "As soon as it is released in Japan" thing. Sure, it is an adaptation of a Japanese novel, but people said the same thing about Pacific Rim and that didn't do that well in Japan (granted, not based on Japanese source material). Japan also isn't that big a market anyway.
I don't think it'll break 100 mil here. PR just barely broke 100 mil on the last few days it was out in wide release on a stronger opening weekend. Overseas gross will be the savior here. It's a shame. It's really good. |

Assuming that it breaks even at least globally, this might be good because, save for the Transformers movies, Amer. adaptations of manga/anime/light novels haven't done well at the box office.
