I know is way too soon to say anything yet, but that notice kinda confirms it's gonna be a japanese cast...
not like I'm surprised, I was kinda expecting this and that "battle island", the buildings doesn't fit the style of the manga, so I suppose it's gonna be like a modern AU(???) this is gonna be like the live-action of Kuroshitsuji it seems(? though I haven't seen the film yet so I can't really tell) so far I have no expectation for this, but let's just wait and see how does it turns out.... ^ those are only my suppositions, don't take it really seriously |

I honestly can't say that would be a bad thing though. Whenever I see live action movies made out of series that try to retell the storyline, it's an utter failure, and I'm not quite sure what kind of noncannon story they could make from AoT if it's going to take place during the actual storyline. If they were to make an AU, it would be much safer and they wouldn't have to worry about not being precise with the series (which would know fans would complain about) if they purposefully try to change it into something unique. The Japanese cast was obvious (but maybe they'll have the decency to at least dye actors' hairs). Personally I'm hoping it becomes popular enough in the US to have our own version made here where the cast would obviously be more diverse and precise to the original cast. Ahh, wishful thinking. :*D |

in my opinion it's safer to assume they would choose to localize the movie more than to make a total new version of it (?) I'm not familiar with live-actions since I have never seen one and that's why I don't know what to think of it (and that's also why I try to not judge it or at least as less as I can), but I really hoped they would have a more "international" cast since, in my opinion, one of the things that really makes AoT "special" (at least for me) is the variety and diversification between the characters -like if they came from different countries and such- (but again is way too soon to say anything, I mean, they only announced one actor so far lol, so maybe, with a lot of luck, they add a non-asian actor in there? hope so) so if really they only have a japanese cast it would be quite a let down, but as I said above I was kind of expecting this, I know it's almost impossible for them to find an actual good international cast that could both speak japanese fluently and be good actors |

I suppose they can pull a reverse on the characters, have all the cast be asian with the exception of one character being mixed/half Japanese. Would be an understandable twist for them to do that.

With the right director, I could definitely see Attack on Titan work better as a Hollywood film. Actually, I might prefer it. You'd have a primarily Caucasian cast (plus Mikasa), the possibility of a strong budget, and studios that have great experience with CGI. I am interested in seeing how this film tackles Mikasa, though. Will they erase the plot point? Or just pretend that everyone is Caucasian?
I'm a bit worried about what the scenes where they're flying through the city and/or attacking titans will look like. Theoretically, those will be the eye candy shots; the ones they stick in the trailers and get the audience exhilarated. But they're going to be heavy on CGI. Does the film have the budget (and the production companies the talent) to make them look great? |

I was kind of hoping they forgot about making a live action AoT movie (the special effects...ugh) The idea that they might turn it into an alternate universe version taking place in modern day Japan is interesting, though. Why not? There's an AU junior high manga, and there is only so much material to adapt at this point, anyway.

So this is like the reverse of the live-action Akira movie in casts. Anyways, if ya guys are curious about "Battleship Island" / Gunkanjima aka Hashima Island, it's an once-modern-now-abandoned island looking like a battleship:

It's like Detroit.

i've seen A LOT of Miura Haruma's works (in fact I am a HUGE ASS FAN of him) but tbqh idk bout his role as Eren if he's really playing him. He seems a bit too old imo lolllll
SnK would prolly be off as an American film, but knowing Japan and their monster movies, it'll either be a hit or a miss FOR MOST PEOPLE. I like and approve of the script writer, his work with Gantz was brilliant and so was with 20th Century Boys. My only concern is the CGI of the titans and that is the only thing I'm anal about, and that America would probably be able to do better than Japan. I'LL STILL BE WATCHING THIS MOVIE THO for Miura Haruma and my liking for SnK

I can't say how I feel about Haruma Miura being cast as Eren, because I've never seen anything that he's been in (need to change that).
In the manga Eren is German, but he also functions as a proxy Japanese person which is really evident when he turns into his Titan form which was modeled after a Japanese MMA fighter. With regards to the casting in general, I won't be surprised if the film goes with an entirely Japanese cast. The Japanese film industry is very homogenous, not that Hollywood isn't. The lack of East Asian actors regularly employed by Hollywood is staggering. But still if Hollywood wants to cast Japanese or Chinese actors - as in the case of recent films like Pacific Rim and 47 Ronin - they can fairly easily. In Japan that's not really the case. The only gaijin actors usually on hand are ex-pats who aren't "real" actors and whose performances tend to be pretty abysmal. So it'll probably be for the best if AOT is done with a fully Japanese cast, which could mean it would have to be some kind of AU story. Also lets not assume that Hollywood would cast this film properly either. Hollywood can be pretty tone deaf when it comes to casting diverse characters. Look at The Last Airbender film or the proposed casting for the live-action Akira as examples. You let Hollywood make an AOT film and they would probably cast someone like Jesse Eisenberg as Eren. Some folks have also commented about concerns over the SFX and CGI, but that's what I'm least worried about. The director, Shinji Higuchi, started off as a SFX artist working on films like the 90s Gamera trilogy. He knows SFX, as the AOT Subaru commercial shows. And I doubt the Titans will be CG. Like the commercial they'll be actors in suits or puppets. Classic tokusatsu/kaiju eiga stuff. And that's what gives me the most hope for this film. You've got a great studio behind it - Toho - a great director with knowledge of SFX - Higuchi - and a pair of solid writers. I think the film will be outstanding. |

Can't see why we are beating Japan up over a Japanese cast, when Hollywood does it all the time their way. At least, Japan has a reason for not casting Westerners.
An all star Japanese cast, with one female western actress portraying the last survivor from the lost land of America. Maybe Rally from GSC. |
