The headline has a typo. (it should be release not releases)

I was almost fooled. The picture seemed like an anime announcement.

lol no thanks.
With android owning 80% of the mobile phone market as of Dec 2013 and is only rising, this really makes no sense to me at all.

.........Why are they releasing this on ISO...... instead of redawing and fixing the pictures for HD and taking out the puzzles, that little money could have gone to the funding of the 3rd game......

Android's 80% comes in part from low-end phones where people don't pay for, or even necessarily use, any of the apps.
But let's not have a mobile platform pissing match. If there's Android money being left on the table, someone will be smart enough to come along and snatch it up.

999 was a great game. If it can reach more people this way, that's awesome as far as I'm concerned.
Removing the puzzles, though... now that's a really stupid move.

3DS? I thought it was released only on DS. Am I getting old and 3DS release actually exists or is it just a typo?

... given that a lot of vital/interesting plot devices and foreshadowing are revealed during the escape sequences, and that the puzzles are sort of what make it fun, this is incredibly stupid. I agree with an earlier put sentiment, they should have put the money used on this into the development of the final game...
Also, Alunimus is correct, 999 is a DS game, not a 3DS game.

They made a mistake there. Original it is a DS version.
The only Zero Escape game that came out on 3DS (and on Vita) was "Virtue's Last Reward"
This iOS version is also know (not sure they mentioned in the article); "Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors: The Novel"

And I don't play Nintendo, so I thought it was the OTHER 999.
(But if it's good, I'd play it on iPad.)

I came to say this, but you already said it.
Seriously? Escape puzzle games gained much of their popularity on mobile platforms -- the original game, with puzzles, seemed like a perfect fit. It also added appeal for people who wouldn't otherwise play through a visual novel. Perhaps there were unexpectedly problematic technical challenges to porting the puzzle sections, but this seems like a terrible decision.
