17 is child pornography? I thought the age of consent was like 13 So that should be above the legal age...

And the photos in question? you know, for science!
And to not get arrested I redact that statement and say that while the age of consent may be 16 it did not say he was arrested for statutory rape but for child pornography which remains a rather consistent "must be 18 or over" all over the most of the world.

Something as innocent as two people sharing their passion with each other can get you arrested now I guess. One a person who loves cosplay photography and another a person who loves to cosplay, it shouldn't matter what her age is. This is getting out of control. They call some of the photographs indecent, I mean how indecent can it be and still be considered cosplay?
If she was posing nude while holding a prop, that's obviously well into pornography territory. If she considered herself a cosplayer she wouldn't have allowed that. By indecent it can't be more than something that revealed her cleavage or maybe a bit of her underwear. Still purely innocent in my view, cosplay is undoubtedly going to be a little revealing in many cases. People should never deserve jailtime for that.

Honestly, we don't know what the evidence looks like, maybe it WAS lewd poses with a 17 year old, maybe the law is overreacting as some have earlier posted in this thread.
But the thing of it is I am dreading when it is announced there are arrests of people for simply owning manga that is now considered "obscene" that one used to be able to purchase at a local market.

As mentioned, we don't really know all the details, but since the girl is underage and she went with her mother to the police to denounce the guy, by law they have to prosecute him. Of course, it would also be worth asking if the girl truly intended to denounce him -felt harrassed- or if the mother saw the pictures and reacted badly to them (say the girl was cosplaying Yoko from TTGL), forcing the girl to make the accussation.
Unfortunately, the lack of detail makes it really hard to make any judgment on this case

I'm always amazed at how many people come out of the woodwork to get outraged when someone is caught peddling obscene and pornographic material. They don't know jack about whatever is going on (honestly nobody knows a darn thing about this case, one would think if its true we'd be happy they caught the creep), but doggone they are going to take a stand for freedom of speech. Here's a thought...pick better battles to fight.

I don't know what counts as 'obscene' or 'indecent' in this case, but to avoid confusion there should be no arrests or convictions for this kind of thing if secondary sex characteristics are unmistakably present in the adolescent, which they surely are at age seventeen.
The weird thing about anything regarding age of consent etc, is that reasonable common sense is obvious between thinly-veiled paedophile "rights" and extreme over-protection of the youth (which is itself socially harmful), but no one wants to admit common sense when they can have extremes.

In Japan, you're a minor until the age of 20.
