Here in Pakistan it is almost impossible to make people like anime.
I tried various methods but they can't even understand what anime are. They believe it to be some kind of a movie or cartoon like 'Tom and Jerry'........so I'm only able to discuss anime with my family or a few other Pakistani anime fans (just thought of mentioning them, i have never met any other "Pakistani" fan).

First of all, good call, whoever mentioned Miyazaki. That's what drew me in originally.
I'd just like to put in a plug for the Azumanga Daioh dub. It's very well done, the humor and sheer WTF factor are usually enough to hook the casual viewer. Everyone I've shown it to has ended up watching the entire series.

Sometimes threads like these almost sound like we're trying to convert the godless masses and save them from a horrible existence without anime. Not everyone needs to be indoctrinated, even close friends. I never felt the need to introduce others into anime, so I just let the issue come up naturally, if at all. What's so wrong about that?

Nothing's wrong with that at all Dax. But for someone like me, I only have the urge to "introduce" (force) anime onto someone when they insult it or say they don't like it without having seen it. Besides that, they can go there whole life without having seen anime for all I care. Although if I think that someone would like a certain anime because of their tastes, then I'd tell them about it or let them borrow it.

Touche, however, I often do feel the need to counter the reaction "eww, that's the stuff with the tentacles, right?"

Personally, it's not because it's anime that I feel the need to "indoctrinate". I try to convert my friend and, sometime, family to mostly everything I like that they don't, or that I agree and that they don't. That's why I get on my people's nerve sometime, but at least I don't insist that much. And like pieisexactlythree it can tempting to counterattack the prejudices against anime.

I wouldn't use quite the same phrasing, but I agree with what you're saying. Over the years, I've found that if someone doesn't like something you do or has little interest in learning about it, it's best just to respect their tastes(or at least act like you do )and leave it alone.

Bamboo had some good advice on this in a past Shelf Life column:
Bamboo wrote: | It's not always easy being an anime fan. Sure, anime has become much more popular over the years, and it's getting more respect now than ever before, but try as it might, it can't completely shake off connotations of kiddy shows and pornography. Still, there's better ways to deal with anime-haters than getting angry, arguing until you're blue in the face, or being an ass. Forget trying to counter with stuff like “Well actually, there are many neat series that involve other things” or even the Spirited-Away-Won-An-Oscar angle.
It's all in the attitude, guys. Play it off. Don't let them rile you up. If you can make fun of yourself or take all the jokes in stride, they'll be less tempted to take potshots at you. Hell, they'll even want to be your friend. Take the following real-life exchange.
“Yeah, I watch anime, it's pretty cool.”
“Man, you're a wuss. I can't believe you watch Pokemon and stuff.”
“Hey, hey, don't diss the Pokemon. That show is friggin' awesome.”
“Are you serious??”
“Dude, they're like the X-men of the animal world. You just don't know.”
The other person will be so confused s/he won't even think to keep jabbing at you. Another example:
“You sick pervert; I bet you spend all your time watching those nasty porno cartoons!”
“Yeah, all the time. I have like, WALLS of it back home.”
“I bet you even watch that nasty poop-eating porn.”
“EVERYDAY. There's this one where this chick craps in a bowl and mixes it with her Cheerios. It's so hot.”
“… are you serious?”
“No.”
Believe me, you'll make friends so much faster when you're not so wrapped up in being angry. |
