Guess I'm guilty, I'll watch the first DVD and start my ratings from there, of course modifying it with each release after that. I will also not rate anything the absolute worst or a masterpiece until I've seen the whole thing or seen enough of it where I can be certain. However, I would certainly never rate a series I haven't even seen yet or wasn't even out yet. Those ratings just sound like your typical Narutard mode of thinking.

When i wrote the initial write up I can easily be charged with not writing out my full thoughts. If you watch an anime that is horrible then by all means rate it after a few eps and leave it at seen some or will not finish. I was referring to the people who rate a series that they intend to keep watching only after a few episodes. It is true you can change your ranking but would it not be easier to just do it once when you are SURE about the rating and be done with it? The way i handle ratings is that for any series 14 eps or less i rate only after i have seen it all. For 24-26 i usually do the same but i have been known to throw down a rating around ep. 20 because I was very confident in my rating. For any series longer then that (your 50+ series) I will atleast wait until after the first story arc before giving a rating.
People can rate however they feel, my biggest reason for writing this was to draw attention to the pure insanity of those who had already rated the next naruto season. This was just too much in my mind. Perhaps the admins could set it up where no ratings can be given until at least the first episode has aired. That would keep something like this happening again. |

I completely agree with the OP on this. Isn't fandom a really sad thing? People who love something so much that they'll rate it and anything remotely related to it masterpiece just because of the name. The reverse is also pretty annoying, like how someone rated Advent Children "worst ever" in every single language available on ANN. Actually, rating something "worst ever" really should only be used once because...I mean you can only consider one anime to be "the worst ever," although I've yet to see anything that's remotely that bad.
I've never rated a series without seeing the entire thing. Anything that I stop seeing, I don't rate, even if I've seen several seasons of it, because, well Naruto is a great example. Sure, the first few seasons are (debatably) pretty good, but if you consider the filler episodes, you can't say it's as good. A series is a single series to me, and its entirety should be taken into account, regardless of whether not it's "filler." I primarily use the rating system as a personal reference, but does anyone know how to make it public so that I can use it to recommend anime to friends? |

This topic can help you out with that. Last edited by Miho on Thu Jan 04, 2007 7:40 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Just go to your "My Anime" page and click the link near the top that says "Edit my categories." When that comes up, hit the "edit" link for the category you want to make public. There should be a box near the bottom you have to check that says something like "Allow public to view this category," click save, and you're done! Edit: And Miho beats me in by a second with a link that explains everything. Darn. |

I rate mine at the half way point to a moderately good rating, and then re-evaluate the rating once I finish rating it higher or lower if it's neccessary. I'd never give anything masterpiece or excellent without seeing the entire thing, obviously.

Well I have a list of the animes I've seen. but only one of them I have only seen the first episode of right now called Afro Samurai and I rated it masterpiece (eventhough I only saw one episode right now since there are only 5 episodes of the show) because after watching the first episode online before it aired on TV. It was very freakin' awesome.

I guess someone would be considered a "ratings spammer" if they went and voted a title "Masterpiece" or "Worst Ever" in every single language available. I think I'll give Mutineers Moon a "Very Good" rating because it's one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors. |

In the long run, with enough sample size, the rating spammers shouldn't really matter. Also, when it comes to ratings affecting the decisions of potential viewers/buyers, it is up to the consumer to do their homework and check for possible spam before complaining. Of course, it is wrong to spam rate any title, but that really isn't something that one person or even a group can fix. While it only takes one person to ruin things for a lot of people, it usually takes everyone's cooperation to reach an optimal level.
Also, I don't think fandom itself is a problem. For anything to have a huge fanbase, it has to be fairly good. Much like how a horrible sports team has a hard time getting fans, it should be the same for anime. I would suggest that spam rating for something that you've never been exposed to simply because it's in the franchise of something that you've loved is a personality problem, and not a problem of the system or society. |

I don't think it's fair to inherently exclude ratings of excellent of masterpiece from your ratings before the show is done either. Sometimes, you have to see how everything ends before you can completely sort out your feelings, but it is important to also accurately rate it 'so far'. A bad ending can ruin an anime, but by not rating it a masterpiece because the ending may not be at the same level as what you've seen so far, you're assuming that the ending is not going to be good. If what you've seen is a masterpiece, there should be no issues in rating it a masterpiece under most circumstances (i.e. if you're following the show within a reasonable time of its release). I was waffling on what to rate Mushishi for example after the first episode, so I didn't put anything down; then I saw the second episode and had rated it a masterpiece within two minutes of the ending credits, only rarely did individual episodes after that drop below what I would consider 'masterpiece' ratings, but never did I seriously reconsider the rating.
Of course, that is not quite the same, as it is of episodic nature... but even if something is not, there's nothing wrong with rating anything whatever you feel it deserves, so long as it accurately reflects your opinion. |

Thanks, Miho and 8daze! I've been wondering about that for...probably over a year now. The ANN encyclopedia and rating system is so wonderful.

For the curious, many people talked about the method to their madness of rating anime in this thread.
