Well the answer for that question is the same for "Why do people criticize?" It's just another thing to criticize and I still don't know why people criticize. But people do.

Ignorance and stupidity are one in the same you can't have one without the other. As for why I think people make fun of us for watching cartoons ( personaly I hate it when people refer to anime as cartoons ) is cause they belive that cartoons are for kids. And we as a whole must not be grown up yet and it gives them a cause to ridicule. |

Ok, ignorance =\= stupidity. Look up the word omg. Ignorance isn't a derogatory word once you know the meaning of it. You can't LOOK stupid for saying IGNORANT things.

I have to agree a bit on the whole thing about them not really being your friends. Friends normaly know when to stop. I have this as well. I told some of my closer frineds that I wached hentai  ...I know big, big mistake. Well they told this guy and now he keeps making jokes about...pokemon porn  . Ok, I kinda thought it doesn't matter but this guy just keeps bringing it up and it's just annoying. It's not just him making such a bad joke but that he actually thought up that joke. Why pokemon? It kinda shows that he doesn't know about anime. I'm a polite person so I haven't told him to shut up yet but I find his ignorance annoying. I feel a bit sad saying this but his ignorance is more annoying than him making fun of me lol. And well, I'm more of a yaoi fan. So it's like woah. Why am I getting trouble about hentai?
But anyway it's my fault for telling people stuff like that. Just that about how some people make fun of anime. It's not just the occasional joke it's the way that some people will actually use it as a way to look down on others. I find that quite disturbing and just wrong. Fine if you don't like anime or manga but that doesn't mean that I will feel comfortable if people start saying anime is crap and mouthin off about it. You can say you don't like something without being offencive. |

I think a reason why some people criticize anime is that it is conducive to a deeper fandom than most other media or genres therof. The stereotype of the anime fan is the nerdish, convention-going cosplayer with too much time on his hands, and to some degree this may be true. There are people who hate or fear great passion, no matter what it is for. They think that everyone should just live according to the normal and not get too high or too low. Anime counters that.

Asking why people criticize anime is pretty much the same as asking why people criticize in general. It's because A) They're ignorant about it and B) They don't understand it. Rap is a fine example other than anime. People say rap is all bragging about how much money "ya got" or "how many women ya got". They say this because it's the mainstream stuff they pay witness to. Pokemon and Yu-GI-Oh! are the most mainstream anime since they're adored by kids. This gives people a feeling that this is what all anime are like. I remember when people said all anime was like Dragonball Z or Sailor Moon. Now it's "All anime are like POkemon and Yu-GI-Oh!". Would it be different if a show like FMA or Hellsing was on public TV? I wouldn't be able to say but there IS a chance.
And one thing I've had on my mind for a while: If those that watch cartoons are immature, that means so are people who watch shows like Family Guy or South Park. Sounds pretty hypocritical to me. |

I agree entirely with lifedreams38 that it may be an occasional joke but some might use it to look down at others. I also agree with Shonen Bat about Family Guy and South Park being an anamation show like anime. It appears that people criticize anime because they use it to make fun of others, their first look at it, and they sometimes are just ignorrant.

To be honest many of the people I have encountered dont really have a bad opinion of anime. I know I have loaned some to many of my friends and people from work. The more popular stuff in particular ( Cowboy Bebop, GitS, Studio Ghibli ) and they all liked it and were interested in more.
Still they wouldnt have seen the dodgier side of anime as the ones I mentioned have a more serious/mature content. They might think differently on encountering hentai/loli/ecchi as its not really something that is a part of the culture over here. |

I'd say one of the things that turns people off from Anime are the rabidly hardcore fans. Hardcore anime fans were infact one of the things that initially turned me off from anime and manga simply because I don't really fit into that stereotype at all. I'll put it bluntly I still find cosplay fairly strange and mildly creepy, and I don't really care very much about anime conventions. But I still really enjoy reading manga and watching the occasional anime.
To put it bluntly everybody is different and we all like different things and have different tastes, I think its great that you are trying to get your friends into anime but I think you also need to realize that their are some things that people just aren't going to like or understand. Like I'll tell you right now I don't think I will ever fully understand why people enjoy cosplay and I have a feeling I'm always going to find it a bit odd. In the same way your friends may never really get what is so great about anime and it probably isn't the greatest idea to constantly harass them about it. I'd say if they are your friends then most likely you share other stuff in common then your enjoyment of anime and perhaps you should just focus on that when you’re with them and enjoy anime when you have personal time. Still I can't speak for you or tell you what to do, but I hope that what I said is in some way helpful. PeaceOut-> icebeast |

Thanks icebeast for that comment. I agree that I shouldn't keep trying to make them like anime, but actually I'm trying to stop them from making fun of me about anime. Although I do agree with your comment and it does help.
