In other words: lolicon? But what are they going to do about it? All the authors have to do is slap on that age 18 mark on the character and they're good to go. I don't think you could ever depict a child in porn comics over here. They'd probably flame you out of your house if they discover where you live.

Would anyone care the translate the full article so those of us who can't read Japanese can fully discuss it? Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time!

From what little is provided on the homepage, it sounds like a typical waste of public dollars. Why is the Japanese National Police Agency wasting time "speculating" on the percentage of adult manga that feature a nebulous and undefined group called "children."
Article Summary wrote:
The article does not define "children" (minors, or young children)

Perhaps the money and time spent on this would have been better spent fighting actual crimes involving real people in the real world. (Why do I care how the Japanese National Police Agency wastes money? I hate seeing the public's tax dollars wasted regardless of which country it's happening in.)

*Edited to fix the quote.

100 out of thousands isnt such a great sample, but anyway hopefully people don't take this out of perspective. Japan still has one of the lowest rates of pedophilia in the world despite this lolicon.

Yeah, the "not specifying age" thing bugs me. I mean, there's the really, really underaged Lolita and Shouta, but, technically, most "teens" are qualified as underage too. I can't speak for regular hentai, but most of the yaoi I see is high school, college-aged types.

Teens don't bug me, being of that age myself, but...

This just sounds like one of those moralistic raise-the-alarm sorts of things, where they take vague information and blow it all out of porportion.

...uhh, that's probably lowest reported and/or prosecuted. I'm sure Japan has just as many if not more pedophiles per capita as the US and other countries.

I really thought it would've been like 50%. I've been constantly told Japan has an obsession with untraditional sex relationships especially with the minors. Still But 30% thats, well thats 30% too much. That doesn't really look good, makes you wonder whether or not the Japanese really do have an obsession with sex and minors.

Is "lolicon" material even illegal in Japan (assuming it's censored, etc.)? The argument that purging this sort of material with have any (beneficial) affect on the rate of sexual crimes against minors seems rather tenuous. I'm not sure what their intention in conducting this study was, but it does indeed seem like a waste of tax dollars (or yen as the case may be).

As long as the sample was chosen randomly, 100 out of "thousands" isn't bad. Analyzing even a very small percent of the material in question will yield fairly accurate results if the set is chosen randomly.

Meh, I don't think that sample is good at all. Why didn't they examine all of it?

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the rate was a high number. But they really should do a better study before stating it as fact.

Sampling all of it would have been an even bigger waste of money. I don't know if people just slept through their statistics courses or what, but you can certainly get highly accurate results without sampling anywhere near "all" of the material.

yeah, no kidding. As long as the sample was a truly random sample, the results should be accurate within a fairly close range (+5%, I'd imagine).

Still, the study's vague definition of "children" and alarmist tone are certainly something manga/anime fans DON'T need.

call it what you want it, its SICK! and lolicon isnt illegal in japan, but it labels you as lower than scum. even regular child porn is legal there. also, the reason the crime rate and such in japan is so low is because that the country is so ashamed of attracting attention to themselves that theyre afraid to admit what happened. subways in japan arent safe for women, cause they get assaulted so much, even if they dont report it. that "nail that sticks out get hammered" thing is such bullsh*t! its almost a crime to stand up for yourself. theres also a habit of otaku in akihabara getting the crap kicked out of them for money cause people look for them, knowing they have a bunch of money to spend. no one gets caught because of this social embarrasment crap. and people passing by probably dont even do a thing. just ignore it. too much of a scene

A person in japan can marry at 13 with parental consent, and by their own choice at 16. This creates a question of how do you say someone is a child when their old enough to marry? or already married?

just a few comments, i honestly agree that this is one of thous panic stories that groups use to motivate their supporters.

Ehh, No its not, that was many years ago. While its true that Japanese society often chooses to stay quiet about certain stuff the amount of Violent crime is indeed much much lower than in say the US. If I had to guess I'd say most Japanese satisfying their craving for young girl do so through the whole Enjo Kousai deal which isn't really abuse, as much as a questionable sort of prostitution.

And yeah 30% seems low if they count teens but around right if its loli.

I am always leary of these 30 % of this art form and 50% of that art form statistics. I understand the concept of statistical sampling but I think it is a poor method for dealing with things like books, movie and TV content. The content of such material varies so wildly. Sampling is a good methodoloogy for people and behavior but not for content in media.

It would probably add up to 50%, if they included harem manga centered around lonely otaku. Laughing
