On the opening page of amazon.co.jp I came across this little link.
You can't run an image through the internet's extremely rudimentary translation systems, but they claim the opening paragraph on the first page of the link says something a little bit like:
Google's Language Tools' translation of amazon.co.jp wrote: | Animation DVD and the figure, comic, the popular item of the animation music and the beauty girl game etc gathers! It can also search with the classified by character of topic, you just see the maniac who becomes pleasant it is store. When you find the favorite item, get to this opportunity! |
So, it would seem that you can find all your silly otaku related junk all in one place now. Maybe this is very old news, but it's the first time I've seen this, on the front page no less.
Has anybody else noticed any similar trends on sites they visit? Are otaku gaining acceptance or are they merely fodder for yet another thinly veiled marketing ploy? I've never seen any similar list on amazon.com.

I think it's obvious that anime product retailers in both Japan and all over the world are catering to a special caliber of fans these days. It's no longer the case that people buy anime as just another product, anime fans demand special treatment with extras, premium DVD releases, highly detailed figures, products that respond to their very precise tastes and pay big money to get them. As I write this I am looking at the banner for Anime Fix that says "Filling Your Anime Addiction" is more proof that the business of keeping the true fan happy is where the serious money is made. Stores can't just sell to the casual fan or people who just "like" anime and expect to compete in this fast-paced commerce driven society.
Oh not to show off my leet translating skillz but (in case people were curious) the text in that image are all pretty rudimentary Japanese characters.
It says:
OTAKU Store
Anime-Comics
Game-Figure (and others)

This is the most obvious marketing technique ever. How do you think hip-hop or rap ever came to be mainstream? How long has it been since emo and goth only stores were available? Capitalism allows companies to take stereotypes and sell it as merchandise. Otaku? Just one more stereotype to sell. Companies actually have the ability to create then sell stereotypes/trends. I won't go any more off-topic than that, so do your own research.

Well, anything(one) that can be defined, can be sold to. I would like to see an otaku deodorant...something in the line of "teen spirit".
I know, the scent was prelude to the irony. But I hate the term "otaku" and would love to see it shunned (post marketing).
Edited-I can't spell...at least well. Also, I tend to be hazy in my hatreds.

I just found a very interesting video in Youtube.
The video was a focus on ganguro gals in Shibuya. They started as a small "for fun" organization and later made a sort of touring organization. They get prospective ganguro gals (Some were elementary school kids) through a website and give them a tour around the hot spots for ganguro gals in Shibuya. Keeps the trend going and make profit at the same time.
/So here we see two stereotypes being marketed in Japan... How many more!?
