Quote: | However, the company released an additional statement citing that due to recent changes in the gaming industry and consumer demand, the company's 1.6 billion yen (US$16.5 million) write downs have caused the company significant losses. |
Emphasis added.
This is one of those wonderful accounting things where a cost ( or loss ) that maybe should have been recognized earlier was instead capitalized ( treated like an asset on paper ) and now that it clearly should not be an asset gets written off to expense. It doesn't really impact Square Enix's cash flow from their products, those seem to have been stable or growing and profitable vs current expenses.
Mainly this just makes the stockholders frown as it impacts the worth of their holdings.

They need to get better titles out quicker. Like FF15, they need that out in 2014 and not wait for 2015

With what? What do they have? Drakengard 3 that will at best do 150,000. Lightning Returns that will probably sell worse then XIII-2 and dosen't have a worldwide release. The money sink 14?

Everyone makes a little more money over Christmas - maybe not enough to out weigh the losses. They're not going anywhere for a while anyway.
Edit: Also note there was a winky face.

I'm a pinball enthusiast. It's worse for us considering the difficulty of owning pinball machines, the cost, etc.

I really do wish arcades weren't dead in North America as well to be perfectly honest. I actually used to own a pinball table myself. Formerly I worked at an antique shop before getting out of college. One of the antique dealers was liquidating their stock and I got an employee discount, so I got it really inexpensively. That being said it ended up collecting dust and I later ended up donating it to charity. Nevertheless, it didn't have some cute anime theme so I'm sure if Square Enix made it...

Lol sounds like it
There seem to be some arcade hotspots around as there always seems to be on at a Beach, Bowling alley & Airport. I'm guessing this is because they are kid hotspots (airport not so much but when families travel there is no doubt that the kids get bored in an airport).

We have some arcade machines at the movie theater here, but they're really worn out. There's nothing particularly interesting sadly. There used to be a Primal Rage machine at one, but it's deceased I think. The screen probably blew out on it. Maybe we can coax Square Enix to come over and set up something for us...

Hmm Yeh! I couldn't think of anything better...
Our arcades just seem to be filled with House of the Living Dead and Time Crisis. They're good but they are no Mortal Combat or Street Fighter 2

It's been a long time since I heard the name Time Crisis. Ironically enough, Namco developed that game, which is now the same company as Bandai and acting closer with Capcom who developed Street Fighter II. It's getting a little confusing to keep track. Did you follow the news in the past about Shifty Look?

Wow Tsuna, I didn't recognize you at first with the change of avatar! Shiftylook is an attempt by the Bandai-Namco organization to tie all these properties together. They've been making cartoons and web comics. You might want to check them out. It'd be interesting, I thought if Square Enix tried something similar.
