I've been getting quite lucky with my recent manga choices. Jiro Taniguchi is developing into one of the mangaka I enjoy more than others, and this book certainly enforces that. I'm looking forward to his new release this fall.

Benkei is a great piece of crime noir. In an era when most manga coming to the US are standard "good vs. evil" tales it's refreshing to read an amoral story of mankind's ugly side, even if it was released five years ago. Another Taniguchi noir (one that's even better) you'll want to check out is Hotel Harbor View, also from Viz and even older ( well over ten years). This collection consists of two stories from Taniguchi and his legendary partner Natsuo Sekikawa (together they did the award winning Times of Botchan). Unlike Benkei, these stories are far more existential and character driven. The closest thing to them is the film "Le Samourai." Both are exellent takes on the emptiness and desperation of modern existance, complete with some of the most amazing cinematic-storytelling I've seen in manga. It's pretty hard to find, but amazon does have a single copy left, so I'd definitally go for it.
Lucky for us, Jiro Taniguchi is probobly the most respected manga-ka in Europe, and since Ponent Mon is a European company, he's their mainstay. I'm pretty sure that the book in November is the one about a hunter, but I'm sure sooner or later they'll release Harukana Machi-E, which in my opinion is his best and won a high honor at the French comic festival Angoulême (sometimes called Cannes for comics).[/url] |
