jesus! i'm even more confused now than i was at the end of the tv series. while definitely one of the best looking anime movies ever made, this movie really didn't make a whole lot of sense. one big question i have is spoiler[why did Shinji kill Asuka at the end?] |

The rest of the world was dead in the scence that they were all still "unified" but my take on the ending was twofold: 1) The people could come back if they wanted. 2) Shinji and Asuka were going to play some kinda Adam and Eve in the world. ] |

spoiler[In the end, the choking of Asuka had to do with feeling alive and with Shinji overcoming his own self hatred. When Asuka places her hand upon his face, Shinji lessens his grip and begans to cry. The final words are Asuka's. There are a few other interpretations, one is that is not Asuka. Rather she is Shinji's perfect woman, an idealized version of Asuka infused with Rei and Misato. The colouring of the scene makes it hard to tell the eye colour, and thus there is a suggestion that it matches Misato's. Also, Asuka was dead before the end, thus meaning possibly anyone can come back, this allows for Rei-2 to come back. If you notice, final-Asuka has bandages that are a reverse of Rei -2 and -3 bandages. There is some suggestion that the perfect woman is shaped as Asuka since Shinji has now progressed beyond his mother, and his mother figures. For any of these possiblities, it is a happy ending. Really, no joke. Shinji and final Asuka are free to live their own lives for the first time. No longer are they pawns to Gendo or SEELE or Yui. They will neither destroy the world nor build a momument to it, but live it. (That may be what Gendo wanted. Nobody knows but him and Fuyutsuki what he was planing the whole time. I really want to know, perhaps he wanted the orginal ending? Or was that SEELE's ending? I think it might just of been Gendo's plan, and that is why he was happy in Episode 26, he got the happy life with Yui. Gendo was really a tragic hero, but few believe me.)
Either that or Shinji is nutters and Anno created this as an equivlent of the bird for fans. There is some suggestion that the whole movie was a twisted way to answer fan request on unanswered questions by answering most in the most horrid possible way, while raising even more. After all, we got to know Shinji's preferance, and Asuka got to fight.] |

I count myself as one of the people who believe Anno was just F---ing with people when he made this. I've heard a few unconfirmed things here and there that he never wanted to do a sequel and that he was done with Eva (with all the headache's that surrounded the TV project who can blame him?).

You know. Strange endings like this are never as complicated as it seems. Fans just makes it so. The again, I guess that's the fun of this animes. My take, and this is as simple as it gets i think, is this:
spoiler[Shinji and Asuka are the LAST TWO PERSON LEFT ON EARTH. I'm sure Shinji was just overwhelmed by the fact and had the choke Asuka. But then realize, "What's the point?" and let go a little. Then Asuka, who probably WANTED him to kill her, says those final words to show how pathetic he is, always being scared to finish what he started. They are, in a somewhat symbolic manner, the new Adam and Eve. Thus, the end of one god. And the world ends anew.] This, of course, would not explain spoiler[Asuka's revival. It's possible that Shinji had to chose a Eve, and the first person that came to mind was Asuka. I suppose that why Asuka wasn't too happy about being back to life, since she hates him.] The again, spoiler[the plot never suggests that this is possible. But... then again, this is anime, and we just have to assume it is. I mean, Lilith is a 10-story tall puppet, what "else" can't happen? :/ ] |

Aye, the dvd release translated it into something not suitable for the boards.

The Manga Video release translated it in the dub as "I feel sick", but I have seen it translated as, "You make me sick" and "You disgust me" in fan subs |
