Okay recently on this forum there was a topic on this very anime. The number of posts and views quite amazed me as I hadn't even heard of it before. I decided to check out this title in the encyclopedia and was amused with the plt summary as it sounded interesting and that something out of the ordinary anime to me. Also what shocked me was that I found it being the #2 ranked anime on this site though there are only 270 ratings given if i'm not mistaken. So I was just wondering besides the concept and summary I got from it in the encyclopedia what else attracts people to this anime?
Also i'm assuming its a recent series and is only fansubbed. ughh its back to fansubs to watch anime again <<EDIT>> Also the reason why I didn't read the thread of "The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya" was that I thought it might contain spoilers about the series. Also looking at the number of posts in that thread I thought that there might've been episode by episode discussions. Just wanted to point that out in case anybody wondered why I didn't bother looking through that thread. It's very funny, and very well done. It does a very good job of making you wonder what the heck is going on, and making you want to know more. One caveat, if you like linear storylines, this is NOT the anime for you.
Some other things that I like: Kyon, or rather I'm impressed by this voice actor because he's got a lot of air time. His personality really shines through, makes you feel like him. Suzumiya's treatment of Miharu. The relationship between Kyon and Suzumiya so far strikes me as very intriguing. Yes the 16+ page thread will have spoilers in it (usually tagged correctly so you can skip the spoiler parts however I find that that often makes some posts confusing). Yes it's currently airing in Japan. Apparently also very popular in Japan, I think a news item from last week said that the Opening and ending songs are among Amazon Japan's top 10. Oh yeah and I love the ending animation. I need to get this as a screensaver. |

I dont get what all the fuss was about, as its only on fansubs I', not really going to spend much time DLing them but I did see the first episode(the home video thing) and...well it was quite funny, but the guy making all his ever so 'clever' comments was saying nothing I'd not heard dozens of times before when people do make home video projects so it was far from 'special' or 'unique'. I've not bothered watching the rest and I dont even remember the opening/ending themes so they clearly werent particularly impressive as far as I am concerned.

I would say that the show is a subtle satire of all of the stupid and weird things that makes people go "wow, this is weird, and funny, and awesome". It's very different from anything else I've seen, and doesn't directly poke fun at things. The show is never boring, and always find ways to amaze you.
My recommendation: watch it, and don't just stop on the first episode. My reply to Hentai4me: watch the second episode, if you still dont like it, that's fine. It's just that watching the first episode really doesn't mean anything unless you can contrast it with the actual show/story. |

You know, you could be a bit more considerate and put any reference to that between spoiler tags. The first episode is the stroke of genius that pulls the viewers in so the less they know in advance, the better. It's more fun when you don't know what's going on right off the bat. Oh, and Mikuru is so ubermoe. You just go "awww" every time she endures yet another assault on her dignity by Suzumiya. Great voice acting there. Definitely the star attraction of the show. |

I disagree. Several people, including myself, have expressed our opinion that the first episode was underwhelming. The second episode is where we have found the series to start shining. Whether they like the first episode or not, I would advise anyone to watch the second episode before forming an opinion. |

I disliked the first episode too. I loved the second episode and became a real fan when I read the novel. So much that I've already preordered all the collector limited R2 dvds. |

Actually saw first and second and after all the hype here and I was extremely underwelmed.
I think it shows a major a flaw in the encyclopedia ratings top anime that allow an unfinished series to appear along side finished works. It's beyond me how so many people can rate a series as "Masterpiece" without it even being completed This is the oppitomy of "overrated" 1 Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (OAV) 9.14 1417 2 The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) 9.01 270 3 Cowboy Bebop (TV) 8.98 2693 4 Spirited Away (movie) 8.98 1847 5 Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) 8.95 2404 6 Princess Mononoke (movie) 8.88 2020 7 Grave of the Fireflies (movie) 8.87 964 8 Monster (TV) 8.84 351 9 Mushishi (TV) 8.84 199 10 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) 8.83 973 |

Well patch, maybe I should refer you to the list of most overrated anime:
1. Pokemon (TV) 2. Dragon Ball GT (TV) 3. Yu-Gi-Oh! (TV) 4. Hamtaro (TV) 5. Pilot Candidate (TV) 6. X (movie) 7. Pokemon: The First Movie 8. Dragon Ball Z Movie 3: The Tree of Might 9. Reign: The Conqueror (TV) 10.Cyborg 009 (TV) Is Melancholy anywhere on it? Afraid not. Are you implying that ANN rating system is somehow flawed or it's some kind of hoax to give unnecessary attention to 2nd rate anime? (...clearly what Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is not!) |

So does ANN rating system need a change, not a complete overhaul but some fine tuning. BTW Melancholy is a great show. And this coming from a person who doesn't watch any anime other then Drama/action. Till next time, Delta Kiral |

To one3rd, Urd, and patch:
Congratulations! You have failed the otaku requirement of being an individual with evolved visual sensibility (進化した視覚を持つ人間)! Here's a small test (non-scientific and very biased): do you love the first episode NOT because of its comedic elements BUT because of its VISUAL EFFECTS instead? ---- Addendum: Not just visual effects, but the INTRICACY of TECHNICALITIES of those visual effects. Dont forget me. I disliked the first episode not for visual reasons but because it was far from a 'unique' experience, have you never seen those shows where people send in their home videos and the presenter/judges/etc all cast their ever so 'clever' comments? or is this just an English thing? (note I dont mean home idiocy clips where the man stis on his childs swing and breaks it, but where people send in their own attempts at making sitcom episodes or short films with a plot etc) |
