Y'know, one of my pet peeves is the idea that you have to dress/act/listen to a certain type of music to enjoy certain things. Heck, I even shop at hot topic, yet I'm not emo or goth or whatever.

Anyway, before I go on a rant--no, you don't have to be an 'emo goth' to like anime. Have you ever heard of the series Samurai Champloo? You'd probably like it--it uses hip-hop music and styles and sets it against the backdrop of samurai-era Japan. Obviously, you can like hip-hop and still be an anime fan.

Of course not. My room is filled with cute pink character posters, figures and DVDs. Do you really think any goth would go anywhere near an anime like Sugar: A little Snow Fairy or Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat? I think not.

Dude, your spelling makes my eyes bleed, I think I might be exaggerating a little. Welcome to the forums… not the chat room.

Everyone watches just about anything now-a-days. You can't tell what someone likes by looking at them anymore. We had to "Identify" ourselves in our English 103 class, and I said I am a Nerd. The first thing out of the teachers mouth was "You Don't Look Like A Nerd", then the whole class laughed. Then I explained why it is that I am, and we also discussed the stereotypes of being a nerd. I live in a mainly Mexican community, and being one myself, people have no idea what we are capable of, or what we like and dislike. Long story short, I am not a "fggy ( I assume you mean faggy) emo goth", whatever the hell that means, but I am a Mexican who enjoys anime...

No, they're mutually exclusive. Didn't you know that there's an entrance exam? Rolling Eyes Wink

All jokes aside, one of the strengths of the anime fandom is that it is very accepting--as long as you're just a bit crazy, willing to accept that "cartoons" aren't just for kids, able to accept things from a foreign culture (possibly in a foreign language), and have a passion for anime, you can be a fan. One of the things stated in the documentary "Otaku Unite!" is that anime fans tend to be people who are a bit distanced from mainstream culture, and/or the kind of kids who get picked on at school...from that, it's logical that many emo/goth kids would like anime, but that doesn't mean that anime is somehow "for them."

To cite my own example, I dress fairly conservatively/"prep," and while I'm a pretty hardcore fan/nerd, I'm not emo or goth or any kind of extreme like that (OK, maybe I'm only emo on the inside). There's no real "model" of an anime fan--if you like it, you're a fan. The sooner we eliminate these arbitrary high school categories of goth/punk/emo/prep/jock/etc., the better off we'll be.

There are lot of people who'd you'd never expect to be anime fans. Of course there's the generalization of nerdiness (or emoness which I wasn't as aware of...personally I dislike that stigma more than nerdiness), but you'd be surprised. There's a half-African guy who lives in the apartment who looks slightly punkish and when I met him I soon discovered that he was into mmorpgs and stuff like Kingdom Hearts. It was awesome (and totally unexpected)...like meeting myself since he shared all the same interests...as a black guy. I'm concerned with fashion/appearance so I try to not give anime a "bad" image...but I think I just might be too self-conscious.

There are a lot of smart and cool gothic people out there, though, so you shouldn't necessarily judge them based on their appearances, and of course you shouldn't feel compelled to join that group, either. The more diversity, the better. I love seeing different people browsing anime. Now if only I could get my best friend to watch some...damn it he doesn't even want to watch 10 minutes worth. All he cares about are BMWs, Ferraris, and Volkswagons. I did manage him to get interested in the Hachi-Roku (from Initial D) but that's about it.

No offense but this is a down right stupid topic.
It`s like you assume that one has to fit into a certain subculture to appreciate a medium, which is animation and comic books? Here`s a fun fact I like to pull out at these type of moments. There is no universal Anime or Manga definition. Both are just a subcategory of a greater medium which offers a great variety of shows. Drama, Comedy, Fantasy, Slice of Life, Science Fiction, Sports, and many more. You wont find any fans that would love ALL anime (but if you do happen to find one stay the hell away from them) so dont be surprised when you see a bunch of goths or emo around the manga section. Chances are they are there just for one certain title.
And another thing, just because they "appear" goth or emo, does not make them one. For all you know, they may all be CS majors. Both anime and manga actually have something for everyone. So just try to lose the label of a hipster rap fan, pull your head out of your ass, and simply give manga/anime a chance. And dont be offended by this post, I feel my point gets to people easier if I lose the saviour blanky of correctness.

Ya i hate those stupid steryotypes goddamn those faggy emo goths with there wrist cutting and devil worship, man I agree I just hate steryotypes almost as much as oxymorons (namely you). You probly don't know anything about them or what its about and just think it's cool to talk s*** about people cause you hera other people say it and that its just the music sceen or how when one song comes out that metions cutting wrists as a metaphor when no emo kid believes that and bands are highly against suicide and say it on numerous occasions and considering the proof that there still alive so i dought there pro-suicide.

P.S. sorry if the sentences got kinda mixed up and the puctuation sucks but im tiered

P.P.S. you suck

This is an interesting question (stupid at the same time) that could have a 900 page debate.

Honestly, I despise every single steryotype that exists on this planet. Seriously, who came up with these things? All blondes aren't stupid! Well, some actually are, but that's beside the topic. Just because oneperson is a terrorist, or one person steals DOESN'T mean that everyone of that person's particular race and religion does the same thing.

You sir, are awesome. I couldn't put this better myself. You know what? This isn't happening in just High School either! I'm in middle school right now (gr.8) and people all have their stupid groups and even in the high grades of elementary school.
Now, I know everyone blames the media for making skinny girls all over everything, as well as muscular guys, but honestly people, rise above the media. Don't ever let anyone tell you how to live or what to look like. Eveyone is so miserable because most idiots my age are to foolish to like somebody that doesn't look attractive, which of course everybody has a different view on. So get some self-esteem, and screw the media.

Anyway, back to anime. Anybody can like anime! I despise (as you can hopefully tell) every single person that thinks by steryotypes! You don't have to be a nerdy person to like anime, or a goth or a jock or well, whatever.

Why does everybody just HAVE to fit into one of these categories? I'm playing along, and my category is: ME! I'm myself, and I'm not going to be taken over by this complete BS of how you have to be one or the other!

You're not "tiered" enough to post all that nonsense, so you're obviously a lazy bum who's too lazy to check his own spelling and thinks this is an AOL chatroom.

by not being a "faggy emo goth", but rather a hip hop fan and an anime fan, you had already answered your own question before asking it. if you actually thought that you have to listen to a certain type of music to like anime, your an idiot. stop wasting peoples time

Because of the insults and flaming in what could've been an, otherwise, potentially good discussion, I am now locking this.

For future reference, those of you who have personal distaste or stereotypes for a particular group of people, DO NOT vent your anger and hatred on these forums, as you might offend someone.

Offending someone leads to flaming, and flaming leads to locked threads and a bunch of unhappy people. If you're having that many problems, make a blog and leave the rest of us in peace to discuss other thing anime related. Thanks.
