When I went to school before summer break I use to get picked on a lot for reading manga and watchimg anime by the usual folk until I challenged everyone to read my first 6 GTO's and the first 4 NGE and they were begging for more. Then I said I have movies and a vol. 1 of Berserk. It seems that the more stuff I bring the more people talk to me and want to be my friend. EVEN PRETTY GIRLS!!!! I'm not all that attractive but due to manga and anime my popularity went sky high. The strange thing is I'm not one to care if people like I just want them to accept that I like it.

honestly, people have always thought I was pretty strange, after all I am Korean and the area inwhich I live is predominately white so I was the only Asian person in my class from pre-school to high school, so it really didn't surprise people that I love anime but they didn't really want ot know anything about it. It wasn't until I got to college that I even met other people who like anime. Of course, I have friends and all, but they are not into anime, they just occassionally watch alittle with me every now and then. At college, I guess I'm pretty popular inthat all the fanboys want my anime (and to also dress like a Japanese Schoolgirl...) but I am rather indifferent to it all. I just enjoy watching what I like and don't care much if people like or dislike me for it.

Yeah I'm only a junior in high school and my sophmore year I was surprised by the people's reception to something new being that people are so into being popular and putting down things that they don't understand. I pretty much didn't say anything to people except for the DBZ fans. Everyone else approached me. They really pissed me off watching Akira when they said " They showed that girl's breast". Other than that they are o.k.

yeah, people can be pretty closed minded sometimes. the only people I really talked to at school, other then my friends, were the gamers, but with the rise in popularity of anime and manga, more and more people are asking me about it, even one of my best friends who for the past 4 years has made fun of anime is starting to like it, though she is a closet anime watcher and will deny that she likes anime Laughing but in high school and stuff, anime def. didn't make me popular, it just made me weird (which I liked being... Anime smile ) of course, being the only minority in my class didn't help either...

Sometimes I feel like I am an outcast eventhough people pretty much welcome me. I really don't like things most popular people like. I just be honest about who I am and my love for anime and mangaand I guess people respect me for it. My friend is the same way except people don't know him like I do. He is the guy who introduced me to anime and manga. I mean, I have watched anime my whole life and but I didn't know what it was but I liked it's style.

Everyone likes nerdy stuff. It just takes time for them to accept it.

Made me popular? uh-uh. I am and will always be the kid they knew for, basically forever, and they ignored and once in a while made fun of. Its kind of funny when they cant remember my name, and I'm surprised when certain people do.
I expecially get weird looks in school when I read manga or Animerica, or wear my EVA shirt.
I have 4 friends in school. Two like anime/manga but are pretty stupid about it (meaning, they like there anime to be hentai, shonen, usually brainless, or just have lots of fanservice. Hard to get to them to like anything else).

And besides, anime at my school is still percived as "those weird Japanese cartoons that are all Pokemon and DBZ-ish".

It doesnt bother me much, because there narrowmindedness (wow, did I invent a word?) makes them miss out some really great things.

Yup.

30 000 people read what I write, and it's all thanks to Anime and Manga Smile

But I guess that's not what you had in mind. Outside of other Anime fans, my vast scolarly knowledge of Anime has not helped my social life at all...

Hey Tempest I write my own manga adventures too. They are pretty good but my drawing sucks. Everyone reads the stories and likes them but I can't put it down as far as drawing but I'm working on it as a long-time procrastinator. My friend thinks that girls say they like my story because they like me but he's jealous I get the attention he wants from anime and manga when he spent all that time hiding it trying to be cool. Cool

P.S. Vigilante 024 let's see that Japanese school girl outfit!!! Wink

Actually, I think you misunderstood. I'm talking about ANN. I don't write any fan-Manga or anything....

Zenitram sounds like my best friend with the whole silent loner, people don't remember my name, misunderstood type. My friend wears a Gundam shirt though. Me, I'm going to make my own GTO shirts. Very Happy

hahahaha, anime make someone popular?! It's been about 10 years since I started junior high school, that's when I really got into anime and manga. I would get made fun of constantly for bringing manga to school (back then there were not much translated manga) and get ridiculed for looking at untranslated comics. People would yell at me "Why the hell are you reading that crap! you can't read chinese!" Throughout highschool I had to live with the stigma of anime being only porn, so then everyone just thought I was a raging perv. Fortunetly my school had a good number of people into anime and manga so I wasn't alone like some of my friends who had it even worse. I guess though later on I kind of became the "anime" guy so when the kids who used to make fun of me for watching it realised alot of it was cool, I kinda became cooler in their eyes, and I would get questions on what to watch and various questions about anime. But actually popular? Not really.

well, I'm alittle lucky in that my knowledge of anime has helped me in my school work Smile

and sorry, Imcoolurnot, but no one gets to see my pic, unless I already know them... too many bad experiences with creepy guys wanting my pic (and these are just guys I already know and are somewhat friends with)

but maybe if you're lucky I'll send you to a site that has my pic from a con, no school girl outfit though
