Yup, I'm definitely going to start watching Kids on the Slope soon.
The latest episodes of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia and Fate/Zero were also done quite well. Shit got real in Medaka Box and cute episodes of Sankarea. Others...well, I'll continue watching for now but my hope in Zetman and Eureka Seven: AO are a little low right now. Last edited by Stark700 on Tue Jun 12, 2012 6:38 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Agreeing with you about Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, the show really wasn't what I was expecting/hoping for and I was about to drop it when they finally get to the main(?) plot involving Yuuko's backstory. And the thing is that plot is so much more interesting than everything they were doing before so what was the purpose in the earlier episodes? It sure wasn't character development....

Aww I am still really loving Tsuritama and honestly week after week I can't decide between it or Sakamichi no Apollon since they are both so fantastic.
As for the alien invasion thing....well to me the heart of the story is still family & friendship, saving the world is just another creative way to show the deep bonds that have formed between the 4 main characters. While we've seen a lot of growth initially between Yuki, Haru, and Natsuki..Akira has especially grown in these last few episodes. |

Tsuritama is supposed to be the normal noitamina 11 episodes, right? I'm really ready for that show to end now, and 22 episodes would only make me more and more bitter. Like Slope, when they focus on the fishing, it's a much better show, but I don't like the character interactions on land nearly as much as when they bond over a fun hobby.
For Pirates, too little happening too late in the story for a 26 episode anime. If this were 52 episodes, I could understanbily see why progression was so slow and uninteresting, but not when it's leading up such a small bit of excitement at the end. The school life episodes weren't even all that interesting and I have a hard time really latching on to any of these characters. That's weird, as I wouldn't normally have a problem with these anime, but I think that this one was always bordering on wanting to do more but never going there just left a bad taste. It's good things are finally happening, but that doesn't make me forget the rest of the show. For Medaka Box and its tonal shift, that's permanent. It's no longer a happy student council story but one with a bunch of overly serious and overpowered characters. I don't think it makes the show better, but it keeps it from getting any worse, which it was. |

I'm highly enjoying Sankarea when it's focused on the zombie romcom. The one backstory episode was extremely boring...infomative, but boring. Sanka Rea is definitely one my favorite female characters of the season.
That, Accel World and Nyaruko are the only Spring simulcasts I'm still following.
Regrading Accel World. Once you're killed in the virtual game, you lose Brain Burst (and all memories about it and the virtual game) which is pretty non-inconsequential for the user in real life since it can be used advantageously. Regarding find the possessed user in real-life - is it that simple? What happens if that person live somewhere else in the city or Japan? I don't think it's that simple unless you're signed in the game and you might get dragged into a fight by the evil being. |

I've been hearing mixed things about the episode count but it's definitely either 11 or 12 episodes. noitaminA already named their summer line up: Moyashimon Returns & Natsuyuki Rendezvous so both the spring shows will be ending this cour. |

I had been wondering about this column. I figured that it was just impractical to keep biweekly columns up under the weight of twenty series and life. It's a little disturbing to think that there are people who watch everything in a season, including series no simulcast, as a matter of course and generally without dropping anything. Of course, I suspect that most of them probably don't have to put much more effort in past just watching.
I'm not surprised that Bamboo's dropped Jormungand. I'm still watching it and even enjoying it, but I'll be damned if it doesn't feel less cool and less fun than I had hoped for. We have all of these characters who are supposed to be crazy and quirky, yet most of them don't make that mark very strongly. I had a feeling that Bodacious Space Pirates would regain some of what it lost. I had begun to think about giving up on it, but was too stubborn to do that, and then the gunship fight in episode 21 happened, so that idea went out the window. The series feels like it's finally taking advantage of how well it's made me like the characters by putting them in a little danger that I durn well do want to see them get through. The thing that I've found most striking about Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is that it's made a character whom I knew better as an afterthought used as a love interest and human plot complication into somebody who seems dangerous and even frightening. (Fujiko, to repeat myself, makes a way better female terminator than Kristanna Loken in episode nine) It's also given her more internal psychological machinery than 'mercurial, duplicitous femme fatale'. I'm a little leery about any use of psychological torment as a characterization device, but it feels like there's potential in how its been played with so far and the atmosphere created by the artwork, especially the distinctive 'storybook' style in Fujiko's flashbacks, as well as the storytelling makes me receptive to it. I hope that they're going somewhere interesting with all of it. I'm also still loving Kids on the Slope. The duet was sentimental slop, but it was such grand, triumphant, magnificent slop that it felt just right and became an amazing moment. I admire a series that dares to be a little sappy when it's earned it than one that keeps trying to be too cool for school and too nervous to risk being wildly enthusiastic. I'm almost surprised that number one wasn't "THERE'S GOING TO BE A SECOND SEASON OF CHIHAYAFURU!." Last edited by Surrender Artist on Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:19 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Here's a fun little fact for those who watch both Fate Zero and Hunter x Hunter that I recently became aware of. The guy who does the voice for Hisoka is also the guy who does the voice for Waver.
This column reminds me I have several series I need to catch up on still. |

My series ranked
1. Kids on the Slope - it has slow down a bit but am still enjoying it a lot. 2. Hyouka - I am liking it more as it progresses. 3. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia - I am still enjoying it and am hoping for a strong finish. 4. Fujiko Mine - I love the guts of the producers to make an adult and dark series. 5. Mysterious Girlfriend X - I am going to finish it, but the drool things is starting to get old. 6. Natsuiro Kiseki - Some episodes are nice, but it does not do it for me in general. 7. Space Brothers - I will marathon the last 5 episodes; I am glad it is getting better (like Bamboo says) |

The school festival episode in Sakamichi was AMAZING.
Bamboo, you will definitely enjoy the 3rd exam. That's all I'm going to say. I'm glad to see Shirokuma Cafe climbing the ranks. Penguin's karaoke killed me. It's nice that non-animal characters such as Handa san get the spotlight now and then too. I suck at ranking but I definitely look forward to Shirokuma Cafe, Uchuu Kyoudai, KuroBas, Sakamichi, and tsuritama every week. Shirokuma Cafe airs on Thursdays so nothing competes with it on my watch list for the day. Friday (late-night Thursday) is both Sakamichi and tsuritama. Sakamichi wins out and I watch that first before tsuritama. Sunday is Uchuu Kyoudai and KuroBas. I usually pick to watch KuroBas first only because I've read the manga for Uchuu Kyoudai and know what will happen, so I'm more eager to find out what will happen in KuroBas. Uchuu Kyoudai is definitely the better of the two however. Last edited by crosswithyou on Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:02 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'm sort of conflicted about a (small) part of Kids on the Slope. One part of me wishes that the series had a few more episodes -- even two more -- to ease up on the very fast, almost hurried, pacing that the narrative has been clipping by. It feels like I'm only getting the very relevant information with most of the characters.
On the other hand, that quickness forces the script to address the characters and their conflicts in a timely manner and actually move forward, rather than needlessly dwell on them until the director remembers the show is ending in two weeks time. |

Kind of surprised you were surprised by the not so sudden turn in Tsuritama. Really they have been dropping hints of an alien evasion story from episode 1 and considering how strange it is why are you surprised by rubber bunny suits? (I have to say I thought it was great that they make the rubber ducky sound when they walked ).
And Rin Rin at Panda's house was great (if a tad creepy) I was half expecting him to steal a pair of Panda's underwear. Polar Bear Cafe is turning into one of my favorites of the season (I really hope someone licenses it, but I'm not holding my breath). |
