Metrodomes cleaned up, full screen version of Transformers The Movie has been discussed a lot on Transformer websites. It's much better than the old version.
Better colours.
Better sound.

It would be great to get a US release, but I don't think Rhino has the license for it anymore, I believe Paramount holds the G1 license in the US and they've been moving pretty slow with it. Hopefully they'll make up for it with some extras assuming they ever get there...

I've only heard about problems with it, being that the 5.1 mix is upmixed from a stereo track (a big no-no), and the video contains incomplete animation spliced in from a beta master, and it's an NTSC-PAL conversion.
Supposedly it's not very good, but utterly no one seemed to be able to get a release of that movie correct. I fear it's just going to be one of "those" movies.

I beg to differ. Where do you think Headmasters spawned from?

From a Japanese adaptation of an American cartoon. The Transformers cartoon was produced by Hasbro and Takara for the intention of selling multiple toylines to English-speaking audience under one collective banner. The show proved successful enough to be sent to Japan and adapted into it's various forms.
Headmasters and Scramble City and such mark when the Japanese took total control of how their TF series went.

^What he said.^
But just to clarify, it was originally only Hasbro that was producing Transformers (with help from Marvel), Takara didn't take interest in what Hasbro was doing with their toys until after it became popular.

Transformers was actually animated by Toei Animation under contract from Hasbro.

No, it was produced under Sunbow, which is an American studio which occasionally hired out some of Toei's Korean/Chinese Animation houses.
The entire thing is produced, drawn, written, voice, composed and designed by Americans, this includes the film, the first 3 TV seasons, Beast Wars and Beast Machines. Anything else is Anime.
