Here's the one that seems best value for money
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Designer-Habitat-Nano-3-0-Flashdrives/dp/B005ERNITE/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1326653656&sr=1-1 confirmed to play MKV and subtitles but no real detail and was wondering if someone owns this. The only negativbe reviews seem to be that it has a dodgy plug. any other suggestions or boxes that you use are welcome. |

Honestly I'd recommend going with a PC/laptop rather than a device like that if only because standards change. The problem right now is that many of the subtitling groups are switching over to Hi10p and this will just not work with devices that are specifically designed to play standard h264 media.
Additionally, they might only play certain profiles of h264 even if they do play 8 bit so I wouldn't trust them too much unless your video meets whatever standard profile or settings that match them. I suppose since the one there is well rated it's possible it's fairly flexible, but I know in the tablet market right now much of the video doesn't work well because of this, again, avoiding the whole 10 bit/Hi10p issue. |

Seconding computer->TV suggestion (if you want big screen) if you want to avoid maybe having to re-encode things yourself, now that 10bit encodes are becoming the next standard. The two setups I use that I recommend to people are...
1) Run HDMI (use DVI converter if you need to) from your computer directly to your TV. Use PC speaker system for the sound, or run sound from PC to stereo/etc. 2) If you have a PS3, use this http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ to transcode video on the fly and stream to your PS3 (and thereby your TV). This software will render softsubs. My parents have had some issues using this across wireless network, but I have my PS3 CAT5'd and can stream large files (1GB+) with no issues. |

One of the biggest issues I've had with such set-top boxes is that they don't render ssa/ass subs properly. Now, I don't mind if styling is off or font is not right (to me...as long as I can read it's fine), but the big problem is when two or more people speak - the lines are shown one after the other instead on top of each other.
If you still want a set-top box that's easy to use and can play back a 95% of videos, then get the Boxee box. More expensive, but better. |
