Intresting that Frontier Works is doing the animation themselves as they are a production house not a studio.

I recently found out that the 4th book in the light novel series was skipped.
Season One covers Novels 1 and 2, Season Two covers Novels 3 and 5.
Is Novel 4 awesome enough to be made into a film, kind of like Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya?

"Animation Production" is an administrative billing - basically the entity coordinating the flow of work and managing the production budget/schedule. If you have the financing and personal connections (to secondary contractors and key animators), you can take on the role even if none of the actual work occurs in-house.
That said, the above arrangement is impractical for all but the smallest projects.
