I hope i'm wrong for sony, but this whole UMD movie thing is really a big flop. Either movies/anime/pr0n/wtv come with a free (or reallyreally cheap UMD included, like $3-5USD) 99% of PSP users are not going to buy them
Why are any of us watch whatever anime on a PSP with cheesy stereo speakers when we can do it on a huge ass hi-definition screen with DTS, Dolby Surround or the like?
Why shell out $20USD for a UMD when i can spend $24USD for a DVD? This will only look interesting if the UMDs and DVDs come bundled.
(I'm incredibily interested in the PSP mind you, don't go off flaming.)

This is great news I hope they package it with the DVD though. and also you are missing the whole point dude this is for when you cant watch at home that why its called Playstation PORTABLE! You could also say why spend $40 on a PSP game when you can buy a game for the PS2 I think you are missing the point of this being a portable system.

PS2 does not have Meteos, Wipeout Pure, Mercury, Lumines, Medievil and some others puzzlers.
Of course this does not mean you're wrong.

But if you don't want to shell over extra money for a UMD you should not waste ur money on a PSP and instead find similar games for ur PS2. I bought my PSP for road trips and when I go over seas when I am at home I can play on my XBOX, GC, PS2 or PC. So if paying $20 for a UMD seems outrageous to you don't waste $250 on a system with inferior graphics and sound when you can buy a PS2, XBOX or Gamecube for under $150. Even though there are some original games for the PSP expect alot of PS and PS2 ports.

I think if you are watching by yourself where you're tucked into the backseat of a car or in coach in an airplane, then maybe UMD isn't a bad idea. I'm not going to try speculate too much about it though; I've no plan or intention of buying a PSP. When I travel, I use my laptop and my DVD drive. Although, I can't see such a niche market being profitable enough to warrant the risk. More than likely though, people at Sony are privy to demographic and sales information I don't have.

I don't really like any of the portables this year. It's like Lynx and Game Gear all over again.

But if your primary goal is to watch DVDs on the go, there are laptops, portable DVD players, and in-car entertainment systems.
Secondly, there is a huge market filled with discounted and used DVDs - why pay $19 for a UMD disc, when you can buy a used DVD for about $15, and play it anywhere, not just on your portable system.
Also, I think many people will either rip their own DVDs or download stuff from the net and either burn their own UMDs or use memory sticks (or whatever the PSP takes) to play them.

The worst thing about UMD is that well it can't play on much excet psp its not a universal thing like regular old dvd. I was wondering though when anime companies were going to jump on. For the most part though I think it will be mostly sony releasing UMD's and I don't think they will sell well. I know I won't buy many if any

The same people that buy a PSP just to watch movies. I'm sorry, but if you buy a car that has DVD/TV Screen every where just to show that you have it, where are the coffee maker and Easy Bake Oven going to fit.
Any hoot, I hope that they don't put a ton of faith in it, even more if for people that hope it comes with Japanese with subtitles. Heck, they might just squeeze in 3 or 4 episodes with a heck of alot encoding. But hey, if you have the cash and your alot of waiting (Like 85% of my time last year.), go for it.

20 buck for a UMD? When I could use it to buy a dvd that will work on my home dvd player, computer, portable dvd, laptop or let my friend watch it.
UMD is limited only to the PSP. And then most of the people that have a PSP are looking to play games more than watch anime/movies, thus it has an even less protential buyers.

Actually, I bought my psp with the main intent of watching anime off a memory stick, gaming comes second. 2gb memory stick pro duos are coming out at the end of the month, they're supposed to be pricy, but you can hold about 24 episodes on them, if the episodes are converted for psp-playback, and switch them out as you see fit. I've saved up all my cash since I got my psp, planning to buy this memory stick. I just hope it won't cost more than the psp itself.
Buying UMD's of an entire series would probably be cheaper, but I'd get sick of the series after watching it over and over again, then the UMD's would just lay tucked away, in some dark, dusty corner of my room, forever.
It's kinda like comparing CD's to mp3 player with limitless library of free downloads.

This could go either way.
The sane, logical side of me says that PSP is a fad, and once people realize that it offers nothing you can't get 1. already and 2. better, it's good as dead.
The worrywart in me says that Sony can keep the hype machine running long enough to kill the DS. O_O;

Eh you blew 250 dollar just so you can watch your anime on the go in a tiny little screen with terrible battery life. Nice Job.
