I think Spike Lee is white-washing the film. Where are the bros?! Laughing

He's worked with primarily white actors before. See Summer of Sam.

I actually do like Firth, but I don't picture him as an action hero type.

v1cious: Yeah, I have, and even if his character doesn't fight, he still has to look like he's got the stamina to do so.

does not have the Korean film's added plot twist ending.

BUT THAT'S THE BEST PART.. ahem.

If they don't at least put some WTF plot twist then this will just be a meh remake.

Josh Brolin is 43. Choi Min-sik was 43 when he starred in Oldboy.

I can't really picture Firth as the antagonist no matter what.

I've never seen him portray anything other than a meek stammerer. Well, there was that one time that he branched out to play a meek stutterer instead...

But that doesn't mean we can't complain, like for Akira. Very Happy

But then, that would be a deviation from the manga, and everyone knows any deviation from the manga is bad. Laughing

enurtsol: There's only one distinctively Japanese element in the Oldboy manga.

He was typecast after the Darcy stuff. But his lower profile work is actually quite varied. Stuff like Apartment Zero, Trauma...the guy can do psycho thrillers. Also Park wanted to cast him as the Bram Stoker-inspired character and he was also Matthew Vaughn's Brit pick for the recent X-Men baddie (studio execs wanted an American guy instead, hence Kevin Bacon). Plus his role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. So directors do see something in him that would work.

But Firth has projects lined up till May next year so I'm not sure if this would work out schedule-wise.

So, something along the lines of "Smack My B*tch Up" by Prodigy?

Firth has this total image of the 'classy British gentleman' going on. if the villain in the manga has a personality that's anything like the villain from the original film, I would be intrigued to see him tackle the role, just to see a subversion of his famous work.

Personally I want to see a film adaptation of the manga.

The Korean film has almost no relation to the manga.
