For those of you looking for information about where it will play, try the little Steamboy website, which is here:

http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/steamboy/

And the other place to try is the Landmark Theatre website, since they are the chain that is running the sub (exclusively if I remember correctly), though be warned they don't seem to be on top of their theatre times (for example I know the sub and dub will be in D.C. Friday, but there are no times listed yet). Good luck!

9:00pm on a sunday night - the theatre was PACKED to capacity. The buzz after the show was hot, so Im sure some people will see it a second time and get their friends to go. And that's with almost no marketing, just word of mouth.

So don't believe the numbers. It didn't break any records but it did well.

September 18th, 2004, 2nd screening of Steamboy at the Toronto International Film Festiva. The line from the Elgin theatre went around the corner of the block, then stretched a full length till the other corner and made another turn. the theatre was packed to the limit. and that was the screening i got into. i went to purchase th tickets the day the box offices opened for the general public, and by 4PM the 1st screening was already sold out.

March 18th, 2005. 1st screening of the Steamboy wide release in Toronto at the Paramount theatre, a total of 14 people in there.

after seeing the dub i went to a nearby store where i sometimes hang out and talk with the owner and his friends. their attitude was pretty much the same as i see here for a lot of people. "its cut!!!! no way am i going ot see that!! they ruined it!!!!" one guy even said he'd rather wait for the bootleg to come.

i already mentioned in other posts that the cuts didn't take much from the movie, but thats jsut my opinion, having seen both the cut dub and the uncut sub. but some people just tend to think they'll ruin it for themselves if they go see the dub. let me ask you this: how do you know!? you didn't see the movie so you cant know. and then come the dub-hater. but im a dub-hater myslef. i hate pretty much every dub there is. i even hate the dubs people say are good like GITS and Bebop. id rather shove a firecracker in my own arse and light it up then watch the bebop dub, thats how much i dislike it. but the Steamboy dub, i actually like.

so if you have absolutely ANY common sense and/or brains, go out and see this movie in the theatre, for your own enjoyment, and for the future of anime in North America. and if its not playing in yoru area, sony does promise more theatre on the 25th

Horsesh*t. I've seen both the American DVD release and the Japanese VHS and there's absolutely no difference (aside from the lack of subtitles, anyways).

I know, because Lasseter respected Spirited Away enough to leave it alone. The point is that Miyazaki didn't care what Lasseter did.

v1cious: It might as well be $100 million. But yeah, there's that issue of scale. Animation in Japan's done on the cheap.

Insteresting, that scene where spoiler[ the knights first meet the cops and then they cut to other scenes] did seem poorly edited.

Anwyay, none of those cuts made much sense. I belive it was just a time issue. Here's hoping for an uncut DVD. Plus, hey, at least this movie got a *($#ing dub, in thearters no less. I liked the dub too. Being set in England, hearing them speak English just went better.

As for the movie itself, I loved it. I will say it's more of an action movie and a bit light on the depth and story. Yet while I disliked that in Appleseed, I loved it here. Something about the characters, about the way the Steam boy was in this adventure, was really exillarting. The steampunk aspect of the film didn't hurt as I love that little odd subgenre. Plus the animation, designs, and scenes are beautiful. I can see how some can pass on this, but I loved it.

Wyvern: You are a satrical master

GATSU: You need to learn what the word facetious means and how it applied to Wyvern's post. I'm also gonna have the balls to say that whatever stick you have shoved up your pompus holier-than-thou-greatest-otaku-ever-omg ass really needs to be removed. You do like anime, right? Every post you make seems to convince me otherwise.

As for Steamboy, Sony may believe in it and try touting it as OMG so wonderful, but Japan's box office sure didn't think that way. I think it looks like a steaming pile of crap (pun intended.) I might give it a rental, I dunno, but I'm certainly not going to theatres for it. I made that mistake with GitS 2.

Schunoko: Kind of ironic that you're questioning my fandom and then simultaneously trashing Steamboy and Innocence.

Yes, that's why there was an agreement when Studio Ghibli agreed to let Disney distribute their films that stated there would be no cuts. In fact, Miyazaki sent the Disney executives an authentic samurai sword with the message "No Cuts!"

Personaly the edits of the movie are not that shocking it was not an edit of a cool fight or a important story part.

I'm tired of people trying to act like Steamboy is like Pokemon the movie. Like it was edited by 4kids.

Sometime I think that people don't like Sony as an Anime distributor.

Not a lot of people liked Astro Boy, Cyborg 009, Memories, and now Steamboy.

Well Steamboy just came to a local theater in my town, and it's going to be playing for only three days - so I am going to go see it tonight Wink

Anyway, I am aware of the cuts that were made, and from the looks of it, they all look like they are all just cuts on scenes that ran to look in an effort to get the time down a bit - nothing major. If it does turn out to be something major when I go see the movie then I will write them a letter/email and tell them that they should release an uncut version on DVD /shrugs/ still no biggie.

I've seen both versions and I couldn't tell you what was cut or not, so I don't think the cuts make that much of a difference. I just wanted to see what Otomo intended. I really enjoyed the film and I would recommend it.

Some people have been critical of the ending. In American animation or live action films for that matter we are used to the tidy ending where everything is wrapped up. I found it refreshing that Steamboy didn't do that. This is basically an adventure movie but not your typical kids movie and it has more depth than your average movie goer is used to seeing in an animated film.

As for Steamboy's poor showing, I'm not that surprised although it probably would have done better with better reviews. I think Sony could have advertised the film more, I only saw a couple of ads on Cartoon Network. And being in more theatres would also help. I think if Otomo had released other films besides Akira there would have been more name recognition or if Akira had been released five years ago instead of 20. It's not even a typical anime movie, which might be the reason it didn't do well in Japan.

Also I can't see a lot of people running out to see an animated film set in the Victorian era. Very Happy

I think people should see the film if it sounds like it's something they'd be interested in not necessarily to support anime in theatres, although personally I want to see more of that. It will be interesting to see what happens, I suspect it will do better when it's released on dvd.

Someone made a comment about hardcore people hating the film and newbies liking it. I don't know about that but I can say I've been interested in anime since the Speed Racer days, and as I've said I loved the film. Wink

I must say I am not completely surprised this wasn't a hit, as it never garnered much in profits during it's Japanese release. I did hope it would do better, but small theatrical releases aren't big moneymakers anyhow. It will all come down to how the DVD sells and I'm sure it will get more attention.

Did it really do that badly at the Japanese Box Office? I mean, it did just as well as Innocence did.

Hmm, nope.

Similar limited releases have, in the past, done much better. Despite the long commute for some people, Sony expected Steamboy to do better than it did.
