There aren't enough blank expressions to describe that cover.

I appreciate everything Akamatsu has done for manga and beyond, but this could be pushing the envelope or yahoo a tad far.

I've learned from one of the fine denizens of these forums that the mere use of that word is bigotry! Rolling Eyes

From a legal standpoint, I think it should be permitted, though I don't see why anyone should have qualms with restricting it from minors.

But from a personal standpoint, there isn't enough "ugh" to describe it.

If this succeeds at being profitable, then the Tokyo law will have succeeded in encouraging the creation of the very manga that it was design to prevent. It would not be a black mark for a manga to be deemed as "harmful", and restrict sales, but rather as a mark that such manga can wear as a badge of honor, and use as a selling point. In order to get this "badge of honor", some manga authors will choose to go this route, and make the most horrific content they can think of to ensure that they get this selling point attached.

I think you guys are missing this point:
Quote:
.. in this gag comedy.

it wasn't published as an sexually explicit manga (even if it concerns sex) else it would have been designated 18+ to begin with.

I mean look at all the others affected by bill 156. It's the same--manga concerning sex between high school students--restricted. Concerning sex between siblings, restricted. But many other manga concerning sex with college students or non-siblings--NOT restricted.

In any case though, bill 156 does not cover online distribution nor doujinshi, at least not yet and hopefully never, so people producing e-comics aren't subject to it.

Well that much was obvious to begin with for me at least. People will still have the same ideas, still feel the same. Government can't regulate a change in sentiment. I've said before that it actually encourages production of full blown 18+ ero manga now. Because rather than express an idea or cover a story that would be available to everyone by limiting the explicitness of your scenes (i.e. covering the waists) since your previously mature, but unrestricted work is now going to be restricted, treated equivalently as porn, purely because of the subject matter, then why not just make it porn? At least for commercial creators.

I think "restricting it from minors" should be differentiated from "plastering labels according to government-designated morality". I don't think there are that many people who are against "restricting it from minors", but it should be done by parents not governments. It's much better than trying to codify "morality" into law.

Besides, manga of this kind have been around since a while ago (and many more still are) without any "adults only" labels and yet 8-year-olds don't go around buying them, city-wide orgies haven't started and japanese society hasn't crumbled.

Good, we know you can judge a book its cover. Now can you spend time to find out that that book doesn't depict sexual acts involving minors.

The real issue is the lack of a gradient. Everything's has to be categorized into either "hard core porn" or "fun for six-year-olds." There's no fine-grained rating system for manga like there is in the U.S.

Though for some reason it never seems to be an issue with novels.

I agree with Nemo_N's reason about this. It should be left up to parents. And who is to say that a high school student should not read this? One parent or guardian might be ok with it while another might not be. Why force one on the other and why get government involved. It's a family matter at most. (And in some countries you are not a minor anymore at 15 for Iran and 16 for Scotland) And like Nemo_N mentioned, it has already been available so we can look at it more objectively: what harm has been done before? What difference will this make?

I agree that if you really wanted to enforce a restriction then a more fine grained rating system should be used. But the rating system in the US, while prominent, is actually voluntary and not enforceable. It's the reason why some publishers rate things differently or have an unrated version. You definitely cannot legally restrict anything just based on specific content or subject matter alone like Tokyo Law does. (only legally obscene material is unprotected which brings up a whole other can of worms) e.g. see:
animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-09-21/oregon-laws-to-limit-adult-content-from-minors-rejected
animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-06-27/u.s-supreme-court/1st-amendment-protects-videogames

However, if you recall from the original proposals which never passed, this bill was really the result of a compromise (using a disingenuous campaign) The LDP and the original backers wanted to completely ban this type of subject matter, not just restrict it. So I doubt that they would want to make it more available to those who are young adults by an enforceable R15 designation for example.

Yay Akamatsu!

But, ummm.....My Wife Is an Elementary Student isn't even hentai!! Laughing

Why should that series even be restricted in the first place?

It hurts profits, makes such materials harder to access, and makes some vendors reluctant to put it in stock....and it's not even pornographic.
