It's also in Milford CT. I can't say i like the idea though. there aren't a lot of Japanese or Asian people in that area, or they're all hiding from me. and i don't like the whole collector value of a book, or most any collector's item there. I go to Waldenbooks to read manga, magazines, and books. not for collecting. honestly i would rather see the import manga in a comic book store. but that's my little rant.

Does anyone know how much money they are charging? And... which volumes of death note?
 ; I'm a little behind~
I've always been a reader of Japanese language manga, so it makes me happy if I can get them close by for a decent price, but I heard they were charging even more than translated manga? Can anyone confirm that? |

. From the Waldenbooks in Everett Mall, Everett WA's branch store, they have the School Rumble manga (vol 2 is now out). In addition, they also sell Ichigo 100%, Death Note & Busou Renkin as well.
But, to answer your question. D.M's up to book 4 or 5. And they charge $12.00 +tax per book. |

Thank you very much for the info! ^-^ $12... is way too much. Honestly, that makes no sense to me, even if they are buying cover price and reselling instead of just getting in bulk or whatever from the publisher, $12 is a LOT  ;
Or maybe I'm just spoiled ; Plus considering how much I love DN I may fork it over.. but it's not likely!

I would not buy untranslated manga because I quite frankly see no point in purchasing something I could not understand, but there are always those who will purchase it just because it is in Japanese.

There are also those who know Japanese that might buy them. Or people like me who are learning Japanese, and find reading Japanese manga as a great way to practice and learn new words and Kanji. But both groups are probably way too small for it to really make sense for them to carry untranslated manga. Especially if they're overcharging like that. |

Even though I am happy that Borders is importing japanese manga, the price is too steep for me.
 But it might make more sense if they import japanese anime artbooks or similar. There's already domestic anime-related artbooks such as "New Generation Of Manga Artists" available here. So, that's not that big of a leap. Even though imported artbooks will probably to more expensive, I think people are more likely to buy them instead of untranslated manga.

You complain about manga being expensive. English translated manga in Canada cost $15 per volume. The untranslated Japanese ones cost $30. |

There's some of us who DO know Japanese and may wish to buy it for exactly that reason, y'know. In fact, it's because I can generally read untranslated manga that I tend not to bother looking at scanslations, because what's the point? But anyway... while I want more Busou Renkin, that's just too expensive. Even ordering through most online stores would be a bit cheaper. Oh well. |

Ugh that's a horrid rip-off, I'm very disappointed in Borders and Waldenbooks now.
Seriously, especially when there are Kinokuniya bookstores in different places in America (One in Oregon close to me and one in Seattle.) that charge half that price for imported manga. I really don't think they're converting the yen price in any way shape or form in this case, unless those are horribly oversized books they should NOT cost that much. |

Yeah... I'm not buying 13$ Death Note when I can get it for under 6$ at Kinokuniya or Sanseido when I go home.

Apparently no one here has imported manga from Japan. A manga tankobon may cost ~$5, but by the time you add shipping, it is ~$10 or more. And even then, it takes forever to get here unless you pay even more money to have it shipped express.
As for selling untranslated manga here, as a student of Japanese, I like it. I own some Japanese manga for titles I REALLY like. If it has Furigana, I can read it with no problems (save looking up vocabulary I don't know) and seeing sentence structures does help. The thing is that bookstores will need to restrict what untranslated manga they bring over, limiting it to only the best titles. However, will they be smart enough to know what those titles are? |
