It's time for me to start getting serious about acquiring 'Chobits'. I'm essentially down to 2 choices: I can go to all the bother and expense of hunting down the original Pioneer release, or I can get Funi's re-release, which would be a lot faster and probably less expensive. The Pioneer release was in 7 volumes with an artbox, (I like artboxes) and included pencil boards and stationary as extras. The Funi release has no extras as far as I know.

I am a collector, which means that I'm probably willing to spend more cash and effort than maybe I should, but overall quality of a release matters so I would like to get some other opinions.

Question: What are the pro's and con's of the 2 releases? I have not seen either so I literally have no idea myself.

On the one hand, having the artbox would be cool, but it may be an expensive acquisition. Perhaps Funi's effort is so superior that it would be worth going for the new release, and saving some cash for other anime.

What do you think?

That Vol. 1 + Artbox was pretty rare even 5 years ago, so you'll likely be paying MSRP or more. And with most of the volumes, there's no guarantee that you'll get the physical extras. If you want the old release, I suggest the two half-boxes and then Vol. 7 separately. That'd be the cheapest way to get it, anyway. The Funi release appears to lack the 3 recap episodes, so you may find yourself hunting for Geneon's Vol. 7 anyway.

Why would they not include the Chibits or "in between" episodes?

Also why only 4 discs? With another Classic Release (also from Geneon/Pioneer) having all 7 of it's discs being the same exact discs as the older release (Samurai Champloo). It would seem to make sense to keep it the original way.

I got the single disc release about a year ago and IIRC did not pay more than $20 for the whole thing.

I just recently bought Chobits in the Anime Classics thinpak. It comes with all of the animated extras, the specials and the extra chats. There is no extra artwork, but then again how hard is it to find Chobits artwork over the net. I'm just watching this show for the first time, almost a decade after the fact. I like it, a lot.

I think I'm going to like it too. I liked the manga and so far I've been pretty impressed with CLAMP's work. I have found some of the artbox sets, and those which are complete are fairly pricey. I don't recall ever seeing one for $20 though, I would call that a lucky find. I have considered the half-box sets, and I may yet go that route, but at the moment they're third on the priority list.

Something I just thought of, does the artbox also hold volume 7? I've gotten the impression that the original release was 6 volumes in an artbox and 7 came later. That impression may be incorrect though.

So the thinpak set has everything? That's good to know.

Chobits was a great series, funny and possessing a surprising amount of depth and social commentary. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

After some consideration I've decided to acquire the original 7 volume + Artbox release. The issue has been finding the artbox - with a little searching the individual volumes can still be found, but the artbox is a bit more difficult. I have found one, and the stationary set is perfect, but the box, while still useable, has seen better days. So, I would be interested in acquiring just the artbox, if someone happens to have one that they might want to offload.
