I have seen the anime preview in my berserk trailers, and seen the 6-7 score on the encyclopedia, but other than that not a lot of talk. I've only bought two animes so far, berserk and rurouni kenshin (tv-first 2 seasons) and i definately like those containing sword fights. Although berserk was great, i would have preferred some of the more complex fights with more 1 on 1 style, as i saw in kenshin. Anyway....i wanted to know how Kyo would fit this, where the best place may be to buy, and any other thoughts if ya can. Thanks

I have the first volume, and it seems OK. However, if the first 5 episodes don't get any better, this title is going to end up being really mediocre.
I haven't read the manga, but one big difference I've heard is that instead of fighting monsters and demons (in the anime), the manga has humans versus humans, which I find much more appealing (because the monsters in KYO aren't even that cool). And from the first 5 episodes, the show so far, seems to sort of go for the "monster of the week" formula, but little by little it tends to be leading to something. From what I've heard though, there still ends up being a few plotholes. I can't recommend you buying the whole thing, but I suppose it's worth a look. |

Buy the kenshin OVA under the name Samurai X.
The collection box is about 40 buck. http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ADV004182 And if you already have it, wait until mid Jan when Samurai Champloo is released. Oh yea you can check out the awesome preview at the Geneon's Official site: www.samuraichamploodvd.com One fighting series that I did enjoy was S-CRY-eD. because of the good story and character. No sword involve, but mix in some "X-Men"-like powers and you got a well produced action series. Last edited by darkhunter on Thu Dec 09, 2004 4:16 am; edited 1 time in total |

Yes, get Samurai X instead. In all seriousness I can tell you that SDK is total poop. It starts off with an interesting enough premise but just kind of falls apart around episode 16 or so (I think anyway). The manga however, from what I have read of it, is relatively entertaining in comparison.
Point being that while the manga is much better than the TV series, that does not by any standard of measure mean that SDK is any form of "good" anime/manga. DO yourself a favor and buy something else. |

SDK was quite a good manga compare to something like Bleach. |

The first few episodes held enough promise to make me want to see the rest, just to find out who all the charaters are if nothing else. At first SDK is a typical monster-of-the-week show that quickly establishes that spoiler[Kyo is the greatest swordsman there ever was], which then about midway decides spoiler[Kyo is a second rate swordsman compared to the real bad guy -- Nobunaga]. Anyway, the plot is needlessly complicated considering it never goes anywhere. Plot holes abound, surely because the script exists mainly as filler between the numerous fight scenes. There is no particularly good swordplay (unless you consider running your finger along the blade while reciting a few lines of poetry skillfull), most of the special moves are riduculously powerful and have no connection to any realistic use of weapons.

If you haven't already gotten the message, Samurai Deeper Kyo is mediocre at best and by no means can it be considered good. Even though you mention that you're mainly into action and fighting in anime, the fact that you even mentioned complexity tells me that SDK is not the show for you. Nothing in this show is complex, which is made even more evident after seeing the simple action scenes that usually include bright flashes and weird techniques that seem more supernatural than anything else. Don't get this show unless your intention is to waste your money.

Don't misunderstand me, I watched the entire series through to the end; it does have some redeeming moments. The fact that spoiler[Kyo and Kyoshiro were actually the same person, and the final battle between them] were interesting. I just wished the series had made better use of this material. |

Having just finished the 3rd Kenshin box, I'd have to rate SDK twice as good. THe 2nd Kenshin box was the best for my money. SDK suffers from having an incredible manga(at least thru Vol 10 just out this month) which the anime doesn't come close to. As often happens, many things get changed, including the heavy use of demons(like almost everyone it seems). The English dub is annoying in the over-use of bad accents, but the strongest thing about this anime is the Japanese cast. The director commented they cast some of the best in the industry with the idea they'd bring their egos along & the competition would produce some great performances & it did, Katsuyuki Konishi(Amidamaru/Shaman King; Kouhei/Abenoboshi; Spinnel/CCS) as Kyo/Kyoshiro Mibu; Toshihiko Seki(Sanzo/Saiyuki; Duo/Gundam Wing; Raw/Gundam Seed; Shinobu/Greenwood; Mouse/Ranma; Fred/Outlaw Star, Shuda/Rave Master) as Benitora; Hikaru Midorikawa(Tamahomi/Fushigi Yugi; Heero/Gundam Wing; Kikuchi/GTO; Rail/Loist Universe; Faust/Saber Marionette; Zelgadis/Slayers; Pretty Riki/Kill Bill) as Migeiria; Emi Ogata(Yue/CCS; Sailor Uranus/Sailor Moon; Kurama/YuYu Hakusho) as Yukimura; Takehito Koyasu (Rezo/Slayers, Zechs/Gundam Wings; Mu/Gundam Seed; Aya/Weiss Kreuz; Faust VIII/Shaman King; Hotohori/Fushigi Yugi; Il PAlazzo/Excel Saga) as Hanzo & Hotaru; Kazuhiko Inoue(Eiri/Gravitation; Neries & Nefee/Banner of the Stars; Kusanagi/Blue Seed) as Muramasa; Tomokazu Seki(Touya/CCS; Shinbo/Chobits; Kyo/Fruits Basket; Bart/Vandread; Brandon/Gungrave; male Maze/Maze; Shuichi/Gravitation; Ken/Weiss Kreuz; Chichiri/Fushigi Yugi) as Chouren; Akira Ishida(Xellos/Slayers Next; Athrun/Gundam Seed; Hakkai/Saiyuki; Eyes/Spiral) as Sasuke.
Kyo is cool. Kenshin would spontaneously combust if he got within 10 feet of Kyo. |

Grrr...this is killing me.....why rate SDK twice as good as kenshin then? Are the battle scenes that much better or? For every negative arguement there is a positive to meet it.....sigh.....what would you rate sdk and kenshin on a scale of 1-10 then?....(if by kenshin you mean tv and not oav)

People dislike it because it doesn't live up to the expectation and hype of most samurai anime. It's not that bad, but it's also not that good and when people are expecting it to be a masterpiece, they felt like they got robbed. For a series that mediocre, there's so many people that view it. NOt just on this forum but on a lot of other forum. I know you're probably not into manga, but that's probably the best edition of Kyo's storytelling. And Kenshin too, and Berserk too, the anime just doesn't come close to the original manga. |

Well, I can tell you now that no matter how good KYO gets beyond episode 5, it'll never be as good as Kenshin, in my opinion. For starters, there's the series length. 26 (KYO) to 62 (Kenshin, and no that Meiji crap doesn't count ![]() ![]() On top of that, KYO has a supernatual element to it. In the first 5 episodes I've seen, Kyo/Kyoshiro have taken down 3-4 demons or super-powered villains already, all with the non-dramatic fashion of just running his finger across his sword to power it up too. Whereas in Kenshin, the human to human fights draw out a bit and actually put a little more realism into it by making them talk about the technics and subtlties of fighting hand to hand (instead of some magcial energy blade..). In any case, to compare the two shows, in my mind, is absolutley ludicrous. Samurai Deeper KYO = 6 (through Vol.1 only) Rurouni Kenshin = 10 (through Kyoto) |
